Hello all and thanks in advance.
My wife has an ebay seller account and she has been selling 3-4 items a day. It has been as high as 10-12 items so it's somewhat worthwhile.
Her problem, the returns are going sky-high. IT seems like 1 in 5 things the buyer wants to return.
She offers free shipping on some items, so she will have paid the initial shipping, then the return shipping, PLUS have to return the money.
We've been told complete contradicting answers on how to follow a policy etc.
What techniques can she use to gather some sort of protection?
We've tried the no refunds, no returns, that ended poorly, we've tried just about every way I can think of and it doesn't seem to matter anymore. She is changing from a profitable hobby to a sinking waste.
Ebay is or was an auction site. Auctions used to be as is, or at least have some sort of seller protection. How can anyone get ahead with such poorly thought out policies?
Walmart is Walmart
Amazon is Amazon
Ebay is neither Walmart nor Amazon, and with its current direction, will never be.
What methods should I educate myself with to stop this pandemic of returned items and people keeping the product and the money?

Because there wasn't an option to print, send, magically appear a return label.

Yes, we know that. Read the whole thread please.

She got the return request, (return details) she clicked it, she seen the reason, didn't fit his truck, she clicked "accept" then the refund/partial refund options page loaded the next options were refund/partial refund.
I know all of you want to state how things are supposed to be, but they arent.

She needed to read everything on that screen. That is the point at which she needed to wait and do nothing more until the item was returned. Issuing the refund makes it so the buyer cannot print a return shipping label anymore.

Can you maybe post a screenshot hiding all personal info of the closed case?

If/when a buyer opens an NAD case, refusing to accept that return is not an option.
But I assume you know that, right?
It was a local pickup item.....no shipping.
I have never done local pickup as a seller so maybe you or someone else can step in with advice.

Job one -- Tell your wife to stop running her business on her phone app and start using a desktop computer.
The mobile version of eBay does not have all the features of the desktop version and is also not as easy to navigate.
I use the app for sourcing and for printing labels.

Will do.
Basically, what it comes down to is that all someone has to do is open an INAD complaint, and you lose the shipping, the payment, and return shipping.

But if you handle it right, you can get the item back and hopefully resell it if it returns intact.

And be in the negative. No thanks.

The reason doesn't fit, is not an INAD, it is a Buyer Remorse return.
The time any member signed up for Ebay doesn't really tell anyone much about a members experience. The number of transactions they have had in that time period does.

Yes, that's exactly what most people here have told you. But you do not need to refund until/unless you receive the returned item back. You're aware of that, right?

"And be in the negative." So if you're not accepting returns, sending the return label, not refunding til you receive the returned item, exactly how are you currently handling returns? Some of your posts make it seem like buyers are being refunded without being required to return the item, and yes, that's a losing proposition. You mention being in the negative. How are you NOT being "in the negative" by refunding without a return?

The item in question was Local Pickup. I'm not sure how return cases/ refunds work on those as in 22 years of being a seller I haven't ever done it.
