There are about 10 listings for the same widget.
Prices range from $10 to $25.
My price is $10. The others range between $10 and $25.
But one seller decides to price his at $6. Does that make any sense? WHY NOT $9?
I know what other people price their stuff at shouldn't bother me ... but sometimes it does. I'm only human.

Maybe that seller doesn't let what other people price their stuff at bother him.
Maybe he looked at sold items and wasn't willing to settle for the current sales volume.

Because they want to move inventory fast.
Because their acquisition cost is low.
Because they didn't research the market.
Because they can.
Because they are trying to crush the competition.
Because the are trying to corner the eBay market on that widget.
Okay...because they can.
Love this type of seller. 🙄

Reminds me of people bidding at a live auction bidding MORE than the minimum increment amount.
"We have $180. Do i hear $190 anyone?" "I'll bid $500!"
...or...
You ever watch that American Pickers show?
"How much you want for that motor scooter?" "I'll take $2,000." "I'll give you $3,000."

Oh...can we have some bidders like that here? Actually we do and I get lucky and they bid my items past the BIN price...YIPPIE!!!
I just wish that there were swarms of them like before...LOL!

Gee I am glad I sell one off items and don't have to play race to the bottom with pricing on common goods.

List at 12 then pay a high promote add rate and use the couple of extra dollars to pay the add fee and still make good money.

Yup! It is nice when you are either in a niche market or that OOAK group. Mine is somewhat in-between those two areas so I do sell a bit regularly BUT I do have to contend with some sellers who seem to want to do that "race to the bottom" thing which does not allow me to price my items exactly where they should be. 🙄
I guess there are some who are more desperate than others...especially now-a-days.

I would also a little try an alternate strategy. Try mixing your widget sales with some not so widget type items throw in some collectibles of different types even though my main product is vintage glass at about 70% of my listings the remaining 30% is split amoung a number of different category of items. The ability to make a significant profit on one sale can cover a mulitude of sins. This may or not work for you but you may want at least try it. I also found that this type activity makes the buying and selling expierenc a little more fun.

That would be Storage Wars. I have attended many storage locker auctions and bid up many lockers to save time. Usually a few people come up to me and ask if I am going to the next location.
On American Pickers they drivel over $5 after a minute of discussing how the item is more rare than a Super Bowl worth watching.

Price yours at $30 - everyone will buy it because it must be better.

Maybe he/she paid $0.00 for their product.
$6.00 - fees makes them happy enough....and they sell more at $6.00

The first one is an intimidation tactic - most likely they think by going up by 10 or 25 bucks is going to bring it over what they want to pay. So you toss out a high number - but still much lower than you are going to bid - and hope everyone stops bidding or you catch them asleep and not noticing.
The 2nd example, well, I confess to giving more than what someone wants for something on occasion just to be fair - if their price is really low. Usually I would do it if I'm keeping the item, and explain that I am a collector. That's when they start bringing out more hidden stuff that they thought might be worthless and buying that to resell then more than covers the overage.

Prior to eBay changing gtc listings from getting a new listing start date and instead always using the original listing date, to burry items over or 3 months to force store subscribers to use promoted listings I would have use a different strategy. If the condition was the same as the other seller I would have matched the price. That way with price plus shipping the buyer would chose the item with the lower shipping cost. Then if the other item sells 1st I would be next in line. If my items condition was a little better I would use a slightly higher price. Then the buyer could decide if they want my item or the item with the defect. Usually they would want the better item, but even if the other sold another buyer would come along and I would get the sell. I never have liked the idea of each seller lowering their price as it tends to lower the value of the item.
The good thing about promoted listing is while similar items may be shown usually eBay will promote the better add rates. So buyers do not always look to see what is the best deal. Also when you have a newer listing and a buyer is looking at the category by newly listed. If they look at your item they will see other promoted items along with your some groups of your items. While this is similar to clicking to see sellers other items or view sellers store. Not all buyers take the time and with the promoted adds they get some pictures of our item which can draw them in to see more of your items. This also happens when they view other sellers items and they can stumble on your listings. For the add rate you can always raise your price a little to cover most of the add fee. Then if the item sells with out a add fee you make a little more.
