Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

Sometimes the bad people get punished.  Wished this was always the case.  This guy and his brother deserve imprisonment.

Re: Price Gouging

Wouldn’t it be nice if ebay did their job and when these bad sellers were discovered actually reported them to the state they live in so they can be prosecuted, fined, and jailed.  Nope ebay just slaps their wrist, maybe bans them and their back with a different ID doing the same stuff over and over, they cycle of life on ebay, isn’t it grand?

Re: Price Gouging

So I just asked on an ebay Facebook page how you report price gouging and specifically said I wasn't looking to DEBATE the issue just how to report and my phone exploded with dings as I was REPEATEDLY attacked and told to MIND MY OWN BUSINESS. So the situation is this. I have COPD and asthma and a connective tissue disorder. I'm making sure I have what I need and realized my digital thermometer had corroded battery and was ruined. I went to Walmart and Dollar General and they were sold out. I have been told since they're restocked but meanwhile I had looked on eBay. Certain brands are selling on ebay for over $400. With more than 60 bids. I was "schooled" that AUCTIONS don't count because the buyer sets the price and also that thermometers don't count-as well as I need to find something better to do with my time. What are your thoughts?

If only eBay would act like an ethical company and report these price gouging sellers to the respective states attorney’s office in the state they reside in so they can be prosecuted, fined and likely jailed, this practice will continue and ebay will continue to do the bare minimum to make it seem like they care.  Why anyone does business on ebay anymore is beyond me.  The people that suffer from this the most is the generation that fought and in many cases lost their lives for our freedom, and this is how the younger generations repay them.  Just beyond shameful. Shame on the sellers, and shame on ebay.  If there was justice in this world those sellers would be imprisoned and ebay would be shut down.

@gussharp68

You are assuming Ebay isn't doing anything which is simply untrue.  Just read the thread for more information.

Unfortunately trolls are everywhere.  I am sorry you were met with such a reaction.  Some people just can't see beyond themselves.  See if this helps you.

Re: Price Gouging

I agree with you.  It is ridiculous the price they are asking for toilet paper on Ebay.  Ebay needs to be more responsible and take those seller off the list.

The Corona Virus is a deadly disease and people are panicking but that is no reason for price gouging.

Amazon is doing it , so why can't Ebay.

I hope all the postings will be taken off soon, I still see a bunch. Shame on the people who are asking so much money for one container of lysol wipes! I can't believe it.

@degus2jody

Many assumptions are being made here that are not necessarily correct.

There are vast differences between how listings are done on Ebay and Amazon.  Night and day differences.  With the way the Amazon listings are structured, it is much easier for Amazon to get a handle on this quicker than Ebay.

But with the flexibility of listing formats, styles, etc on Ebay this makes it far different here.  Ebay has removed 10's of thousands of price gouging listings and they continue with that goal.

For those that would like to help, report the listings when you find them.  That will help Ebay a lot.

Re: Price Gouging

You will see what happens to the guys from Tennessee. They will be doing prison time as well as huge fines. The $10,000 fine is PER ITEM.
Here is the law from California but it's the same for every state. The new legislation will make it apply to every state. It will be passed and law within a week.

When does California’s anti-price gouging statute apply?
The statute applies immediately after the President of the United States, the Governor of California, or city or county executive officer declares a state of emergency.

How can I find out if a declaration of emergency is in effect?
Emergency declarations issued by the Governor are generally available on the Governor’s website at gov.ca.gov. For information about local declarations of emergency, please contact your local city or county emergency authority or sheriff’s office.

Who is subject to the statute?
Individuals, businesses, and other entities must comply with the statute.

What goods and services are covered by the statute?
The statute applies to the following major necessities: lodging (including permanent or temporary rental housing, hotels, motels, and mobilehomes); food and drink (including food and drink for animals); emergency supplies such as water, flashlights, radios, batteries, candles, blankets, soaps, diapers, temporary shelters, tape, toiletries, plywood, nails, and hammers; and medical supplies such as prescription and nonprescription medications, bandages, gauze, isopropyl alcohol, and antibacterial products.

It also applies to other goods and services including: home heating oil; building materials, including lumber, construction tools, and windows; transportation; freight; storage services; gasoline and other motor fuels; and repair and reconstruction services.

If greedy resellers hadn't hoarded them all off the shelves, buyers would be able to get them.

What do you not understand about Price Gouging being ILLEGAL during a National Emergency

Re: Price Gouging

I understand the fear that some people have right now. But what I cannot understand is the bidding wars that are going on for 3m N95 masks. These people who are selling them to make as much money on them as they can is pure greed. My daughter is a nurse at a major hospital in Boston. The medical staff is literally crying because they do not have the protection that they need for treating the Corona-virus. As everyone knows, this country is under a national emergency crisis due to the high infection rate of this disease. I would want to see eBay cancel every bid and all selling of these N95 masks and tell all of the sellers to donate them to their local hospitals and medical facilities. It is the right thing to do.

As sellers on this platform, we need to show compassion and a  willingness to give to our health workers as they are fighting on the front lines for your protection and health.

So how about it eBay? How about showing some compassion for these professionals who are fighting for you?

I absolutely agree with what you have said but I don't understand your last statement.  Would you mind explaining a little further?  What do you think Ebay should be doing?
