Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

Keep in mind those sold listings disappear after 90 days, so you may want to take screen shots and safe them just in case they become something needed at a later date.

Careful with those emails.  While you are using another account to do this with, if you are breaching Ebay policy in things you are saying, Ebay does link accounts together, so your main account isn't likely to be as safe as you might hope it is.

Re: Price Gouging

I just saw a bid for $90 for 4 pack of toilet paper. Do something ebay! Do the responsible thing & stop this selfishness. These are the people stockpiling toilet paper & selling it on ebay.

Re: Price Gouging

All I've said is to inform them that price gouging is not allowed on eBay.   I only sent messages  which included a copy of the law to people living in my county and they are subject to our price gouging laws. Although the responses were hostile most of those listings were taken down.  I reported them all.

Locally the law applies to both individuals and businesses. In our state it is illegal with Jail for up to one year, fines up to $10,000.  In addition to Civil actions with fines up to $5,000 and restitution.

I'm totally disgusted by price gouging and taking resources from people who need them to survive by asking for exorbitant amounts of money for necessities (even if it's just necessary for personal comfort). So I'm glad you are reporting listings.

Unfortunately I don't have time to report listings. My job has been deemed "necessary services" and while my entire office has shut down, I will be one of a dozen people reporting to work every day to do what we have to do to make sure our injured claimants get the resources and medical care they need during this state of emergency.

Can you tell me where to locate the "Report this listing" button. I'm unable to find it when I'm reviewing the listing.

Thank you

True for some, but here on Ebay they can lose their selling privileges forever.

Re: Price Gouging

For those of you with the free time and energy to report price gouging:

Please report Big Pharma, textbook publishers and the people who raise our property taxes.

Needed items would still be available on store shelves if they simply raised prices in accordance with supply and demand.  You really can't stop gouging.  You might ban it here on eBay but it is going to happen regardless since people are willing to pay a premium to get things right now.  Banning the sale of products because a few are overpriced only hurts those who need the items and can't get to the local stores or can't find the item in their town.

Yes there are other worthy issues in our lives that may benefit from our full attention being turned on those subject.  But for right now.  The single most important issue in front of ALL of us is the Health Crisis and trying to get on the other side of it.

I don't think anyone here has said or thought they could completely stop price gouging.  But that doesn't mean we shouldn't object to it and try to minimize it to the best of our abilities.  There will always be those that are all about themselves and their bank accounts no matter the cost to others.  I think we all know that.

But at this particular time the efforts of some to report these types of listings should be welcomed and applauded.

The local hardware store jacked their price up 500%. I walked away.

Report them.  It is the only way they will learn.  And personally I'd never shop at that store ever again.  I would also let them know why I would never shop there again.  However I wouldn't say that to the employees of the store unless they were the manager.

Have fun explaining the "law" to a judge. Actually, a recording of the process would be great if they allow it. I am sure you could argue that as well. Good luck!

Re: Price Gouging

If only eBay would act like an ethical company and report these price gouging sellers to the respective states attorney’s office in the state they reside in so they can be prosecuted, fined and likely jailed, this practice will continue and ebay will continue to do the bare minimum to make it seem like they care.  Why anyone does business on ebay anymore is beyond me.  The people that suffer from this the most is the generation that fought and in many cases lost their lives for our freedom, and this is how the younger generations repay them.  Just beyond shameful. Shame on the sellers, and shame on ebay.  If there was justice in this world those sellers would be imprisoned and ebay would be shut down.
