Today I have a customer opened a return request. I sold a brand new laptop to him 2 weeks ago. He used the reason "not as described" as the return reason but in details he says "the list description shows it is a 2-in-1 laptop but I want a laptop". I offer 30 days free return, and usually I don't issue partial refund if it is my fault. In this case, the buyer seems using a wrong reason to return, can I still do partial refund?

If you are a TRS with free returns or 30 day returns you can give a partial refund when a item is returned in a different condition even if the claim was for not as described.

Why wouldn't you just accept the return and then fully refund once it comes back?

Do not do a partial refund. They bank on you doing this. They are playing you for a sucker.
Just take the return if they are not happy. Block the buyer.

He sent a picture showing the laptop was used. If it is still sealed, I would be happy to issue full refund.

Thanks for the comment. I have already blocked the buyer. I decided to accept the return anyway, just not sure eBay allows partial refunds on "not as described" reason. If the buyer hasn't broken the seal and used the laptop, I can still issue the full refund, but given that he already used the laptop for some time, it is not fair to issue the full refund.

The way you describe it in the OP, the buyers reason sounds more like remorse or lack of knowledge on the buyers part, than NAD. The buyer admits your description states it's a 2-in-1 laptop, but they want a laptop that's not 2-in-1. It's a pretty lame excuse for an INAD claim if you described it correctly, but I'm not sure about a partial refund at this point.
A 2-in-1 can still be used as a regular laptop plus has the tablet mode when needed. I buy laptops everyday on ebay and know exactly what to expect if I bid on an item.

Did you check the feedback of this buyer first? And google the address to see what type of building it was?
Hopefully, if item gets return....do some research before selling the laptop.
No partial refund.
If you haven't sold anything in a month...that partial refund comes out of "available funds"...no available funds...then the partial refund comes out of your banking institution.
Do a return shipping label and hope you receive what you sent.
And keep it low on the emails to the buyer....to the point...only regarding a return.

Thanks for the advice. The buyer's address is a house. The buyer has 20 feedback but recently he left quite a few negative feedback to other sellers. I have sent him the return label and will see what he returned.
