Packing Standees

I've been advised to post this here, after not realizing I'd put it in the general discussion, a few months back.

I've sold a number of standees over the last handful of years, to various points around the world. (Then, I hooked into the Global Shipping program!)

Standees came to stores as we see them: with the contents printed across the front of the box. But, I'm guessing no one really wants to risk receiving them that way these days, especially with new labels covering the printing (collectors of all stripes seem to prefer the packaging be intact),

So, the issue has always been the packing. Typically, sellers will wrap the standee in cardboard-- I call it building a box around a box-- which means actually finding enough material to do so. It's a real challenge, adds cost for the buyer and involves not a small amount of work. And, annoyingly, shipping places do not accept packages wrapped in what used to be known as mailing paper (heavy brown paper designed specifically for, um, mailing).

Thus, I'm wanting to know from sellers of standees: what's your approach? Do you have a ready supply of large cardboard sheets? Is there some other method that is better/faster? The situation is getting demanding!

Re: Packing Standees

UPS and FedEx do not like the paper because it rips in their sorting machinery.

Sheets are not readily aviaible just anywhere, but can be sourced at ULINE or a local packing supplier.

You can also wrap in shrink wrap, but that will not afford any crush protection. Many times it also gets torn by sorting machinery.

I don't know how tall these things are but for conversation purposes let's use 36" tall.

Go get some wood strips or find a source about the size and width of a ruler ( shims) cut them to size 37" , place down the center front and back ( secure these two wood strips with brown tape top and bottom.

Now obtain the smaller bubble wrap and wrap your " standies" all over tightly and securing with brown tape again.

Now finding a source for sheets of poster board ( it's not that expensive even at Wal-Mart) place sheets on front and back adjusting for size and secure again with brown mailing tape, especially in the center.

The wood strips should act as a stabilizing agent for your standies. Good luck to you.

Go to your local appliance store, bicycle store, or kitchen & bath store. They often have big boxes they are happy to get rid of. Bring a box cutter to cut then to in your car, if they are too big.

I sell books and records and photos, and my family knows not to throw out any piece of clean, stout cardboard that is 8x10 inches or larger 🙂
