Your item has bids on it, there for you cannot accept offers. Good luck selling it.

If you auction has bids, you can no longer accept any buyer offers. Let the auction run to conclusion.

You cant do that. The auction is live with bidders, those are the only ones in line for the item to be sold to. Tell the person who messaged you to bid on the item. BTW, what where you planning on telling the high bidder when the auction ended, "sorry, I sold it to someone else who went around the system"?
Unless you have a reserve on the item, the high bidder has the rights to purchase it first

@j289-21 : They haven't bid for the simple reason that they know the bidding will go higher than what they want to pay, so they are hoping that you will sell to them instead.
As others have already said, you cannot add a BuyItNow price to an auction that already has bids (and it's a bad idea to do so in a situation like this, because the person making that offer has their own interests at heart, not yours).
Just assure them that they can wait until close to the end of the auction before bidding, as you will not be ending the auction early to sell to anyone else.

also why hadn't they bid
Chances are pretty good they feel the item will sell for MORE than they want to offer. It used to be against policy to make an offer through messages when the seller did not use the best offer feature, but it probably isn't anymore unless you get a typical "text me scammer" that wants to take the sale off ebay, and those people just send fake "you have been paid" notices and never fork over any real money. They are pretty easy to spot along with their cousins the "change of address scammers".
As others have stated, even if you had the "best offer" feature when you started the listing, in most cases that is removed when the auction gets a bid. The person can still bid unless you added their ID to your blocked bidder list. I wouldn't be surprised if the eventually DO place a bid after their attempt at trying to trick a newbie has failed. (Good for you!)
If this happens to you again, you could simply reply with a nice message:
Dear buyer:
Thank you for your interest in my listing. As you can see, this is in auction format and has to remain in that way at this time. Will be looking forward to your bid. Good luck!
Sincerely,
You
A simple "no thank you" would work as well. Even if you use the "best offer" feature in the future, you are not obligated to accept one just because it appeared.
I am so glad you found the forums. It is a great place to learn, and would encourage you to visit frequently.

When you auction something, everthing is a offer. Tell them to bid and if their offer is the best then they will win for sure. Congratulations as you just were baptized to the art of people trying to take advantage of new seller. You will do fine checking before its too late. Good job.
Like stated above. Most buyers only care about themselves.
