Size of stones cannot be accurately measured for stones in setting. Caret is often determined by a mm/caret formula or table. The announced size tolerances are less than the variation in results from using the published formulas and tables.
Fine jewelry sales over $500 in fine jewelry and wedding jewelry is a small small percentage or total jewelry sales. THIS PROGRAM IS NO NEEDED AND IS NOTHING MORE THAN ANOTHER MONEY GRAB FOR DECLINING QUALITY OF SERVICE.

I've been a jewelry seller on eBay for over 20 years. I do not have a brick and mortar jewelry store (like many others selling here) but my items are evaluated by professionals before I list them. I have 100% feedback on high ticket items as well as lesser items of precious metal and gemstones. Clearly I am not selling non-authentic goods. eBay is punishing good sellers with this new policy in an effort to weed out bad sellers. My customers are primarily people who want stuff right away, which is why eBay has rewarded "top sellers" with a badge for shipping within 1-2 days. I'm going to lose buyers and eBay is going to lose money. People do not want to wait 2 weeks for purchased items to be mailed, authenticated and mailed again with our snail mail system. eBay has just rewarded Amazon and other jewelry platforms because that's where people will be shopping. This is a ridiculous, not well-thought-out policy. eBay money back guarantee and return policy has always worked in the past if somebody buys something non-authentic. I'd like to think most of us are honest.

Plus I have GIA certificates on 3 of my current items for sale.
It cost approximately $150. for the certificate & I only get the certificate for most expensive items.
For an item of $500. Or a bit more wouldn’t pay that extra money for getting it.
Laughable…

We expect that high end jewelry sales increase by 32% under this program.

And isn't it interesting that eBay's "help page" (and I use that term quite incorrectly) has two different effective dates on it--unless I'm reading it wrong? The banner says "Effective Sept. 12, 2022," and the text below the banner says, "Starting July 20, 2022." I wonder which is correct?
Typical.
Final value fee update in the Jewelry category Effective Sept. 12th, 2022

I saw that email today. I think it said it goes into effect on September 12th. It will keep a lot of sellers from selling one or two items on eBay. I think in the long run it will keep the little seller for selling any pieces of jewelry over $500. I wonder where the items are to be graded. Also, what kind of specialist they will have to grade stones such as diamonds. Would the specialists have any credentials grading such stones?

The authentication services for jewelry begin today.
The fee increase takes effect Sept 12.

I think I have heard this story before... doubt it ends the same..

LOL! Guess I should have read that page more carefully before posting! I retract my earlier post.

I would never have even considered buying jewelry on eBay before. Now I might.

I may be confusing it with something else. But I feel like I heard they would start authenticating jewelry at some point earlier this year.

I believe you heard correctly, it was probably around the time their Q1 financials came out and they were doing the Wall Street "tour".
I don't sell any of the stuff eBay is doing the authentication thing on so I am not directly affected. On the other hand anything that eBay can do to raise their profile with the big spending buyers should have an impact on improving eBay's reputation as a reliable place to shop instead of being known as a place filled with oddball stuff being sold by people who don't have much skill as merchants.

As with most things there are two sides to every story. Like you I do not sell, or buy, any of the items eBay runs the authentication programs for. I will agree that while it may improve the confidence of the buyers, because of the increased fees, it may dissuade a number of sellers both on the high end side as well as the lower end side especially if the program is poorly ran.
Jewelry is one thing I would NEVER have bought on eBay either before or after the authentication program. As for sales I have sold a few costume as well as high end pieces but there are far better ways to sell those items than through eBay.

It is laughable, but also really not the way to handle this news. I really feel for you and others immediately affected. Who is in charge of communication for this site and why do they keep making the SAME errors on how they treat their Sellers and the fore-thought to not tell a Seller timely??

Like you - have not and likely would not, buy high-end jewelry on the site (except from @jewelbiz as know her) and typically am not looking for high-end items based on current economy and budget.
Just hope this goes better than watches and shoes.

Same here..for us that occasionally buy fine jewelry online, I might look at Ebay now.
