New vs Used

Have any others more casual sellers had this situation.

I just had to choose "Used" for a new, unused item simply because it's not in a package.

In this case, fabric and trims bought in a store, as well as many other things, don't come in a package. They're cut to order.

When someone is searching, very likely they'll filter used items like this out since used often implies having been removed from a garment or curtain or whatever.

Can I still state New?

Yes, your item is new. You don’t need to select “used” on a brand new item altho there is no packaging in this case.

Re: New vs Used

@momdadsstash   eBay needs to add "New other" so Sellers can explain why it is still new but does not conform to eBay's "one size fits all" definition of New.  I run into this on old model kits, train cars and other vintage collectibles.  Back in the day many products came without any tamper evident packaging.

Re: New vs Used

You realize, under New, it says......"A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item (including handmade items)"

Not much leeway there.

Re: New vs Used

Is there a way the seller could add to the listing, "new, unused, did not come in a package"?

And how do fabric sellers handle this issue because most fabric, measured off the bolt and cut in the fabric store, is not in a package either?

@momdadsstash  It's blanket wording - many things cannot be opened or unopened.  I prefer to go by what the item actually is.  It's pretty evident to anyone shopping say for gimp braid that it's usually sold by the yard, not by the bolt, and isn't going be 'unopened'.  Fabric sold by the yard is also 'new' - not unopened or opened.  Even if someone sells by the bolt, it's still not 'opened or unopened' - it's not great wording because eBay is so tilted to commodities that you can purchase anywhere.

ETA: I would (and have) simply list your new items as 'new'.

In many categories eBay has recently purged those extra condition choices...Kinda like how they have purged categories and gone with 1 size fits all. Increasing the risk of items becoming NAD's even though they are described perfectly in the original listing that was created months ago. Or a seller to make a judgement call. Ask 10 people an opinion question get 10 different answers. Like trying to describe an annual edition by checking off all 12 months or mixed lot where you can only choose 1 option for the lot.

The old definitions of "new" actually stated something to the effect of "unopened and sealed if originally sold that way".

The new condition descriptions were shortened so some of the wording is gone but I don't think the actual criteria has changed at all.

There are tons of products that are "new" but do not come in a sealed container EVER!

Re: New vs Used

Would a handmade rag doll be considered new if seller states it has been in storage?   In item condition, it states New.   Is there a specific amount of time something can be stored away and still be considered new?

I would not be uncomfortable using new.  State in the listing was cut to order.  Whoever would be buying yard goods will likely know the circumstances.
