New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Anonymous
Not applicable

This is a good one I've never seen this.   I had a buyer that is new, but he knows what he is doing.   He has me mail his package to an old address that he just recently fowarded.   As a result it'll take 2 - 3 weeks to get there, he waits until the first day that he can file a not received case, and then it gives me 3 days until I have to close it before receiving a transaction defect.     Since it's my fault, according to ebay, that the buyer intentionally uses an old address, I'm forced to refund him to avoid the defect.   Now today the item was properly forwarded and delivered.

Thanks to ebay's continual anti seller it's always their fault attitude, I had to not only send someone a free item, but also pay for the shipping.

Thanks Ebay!   This is the reason why I have been moving and selling more items in the facebook marketplace now that you can ship items there, and I don't have to pay $100 a month, or deal with the same anti seller mentality that you see with ebay.

When facebook marketplace buries you in the ground when you want to find whose to blame you need only look in a mirror.

If the oceans were wells of ink, and the great skies were endless scrolls, I could not possibly write how many ways there are on ebay to rip sellers off, with ebay offering minimal protection.

I am going through this right now.  Sent a package, was out for delivery on 2/5/21, then went to forwarded.  Delivered on 2/6/21.  Buyer emails me today 2/10/21 stating they did not receive the package requesting a refund.  Then starts to threaten me with a negative review of my seller account.  I provided a tracking information and also contact information for the local police and USPS.  I feel like this is a scam.

I'm guessing that this was the $365 iPad? Has the buyer actually filed an Item Not Received dispute, or is he simply bombarding you with messages?

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Funny, some people call him a customer/buyer when he is actually a scammer who plays off of eBay's policies.

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

They filed a claim, but according to eBay if an item is forwarded the claim is no longer valid.  They tried to bully me with several messages.  I communicated that USPS show delivered and I have a record of the delivery attempt at the provided address.

I thought the INR claim was disallowed if the package was forwarded to another address.

Seller protection is void when the parcel is not delivered to the address provided with the payment.

But if a forwarding order is in place, such that the package is not and never will be delivered to the address provided with the payment, how would the seller ever know that before shipping the package?

They don't, and therein lies the scam.

This was why, a long time ago, we've always told sellers to write 'DO NOT FORWARD' on USPS boxes.

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

We always write "DO NOT FORWARD" above the sender's (and addressee's) address on every package.

Note that doing this will also prevent a buyer from having YOUR mail forwarded to him, including a return that he makes to you!

Problem solved and 100% foolproof.

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Hi,

Someone is trying to do this to me now.  It was out for delivery today and then the buyer contacted me that the item was forwarded.  What action should I take proactively?

Proactively? Nothing. This is the buyer's problem; an Item Not Received dispute is not awarded to the buyer if tracking shows that the package was forwarded beyond the Ship To: address received with the payment.

I would tell the buyer to contact his post office to find out why there's a forwarding order on his package if he didn't submit one. The package may still be in the building there.

If this is a big-ticket item or somehow eBay gets it in their head to refund the buyer before the package is delivered, you can file an intercept request with USPS. There is no charge if they cannot successfully intercept the package. If they are able to intercept it, the fee is $15.25 plus return postage.

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Thanks.  Ebay tracking shows "research started" by buyer but the attempted delivery just happened today so he did not file a claim yet

I was thinking of replying to buyer "This is really strange. Are you sure you did not have a forwarding request submitted? Perhaps I should file a report with the US Postal Inspection Service considering mail fraud is a felony."

or is that a bad idea???

I had a buyer tell me his package didn't arrive after it showed "out for delivery" four days prior (but no delivery scan). I sent a very lengthy email about how this is going to be investigated, and USPS will want to ask him all sorts of questions, and how I provided all his contact info (and gave the name of his post master, the post office, and their phone number for him to give them a call).

He replied by opening cases for the missing items.

I replied the following morning by contacting his postmaster and telling them their letter carrier is going to cost me $85 because this numbskull is taking advantage that there was no delivery scan. I told them I opened a missing mail complaint (which is how I got the postmaster info), and all I want them to do is mark it delivered. There's no need to search, there's no missing mail, he has the package, it just hasn't been scanned.

And 20 minutes later they did. Half an hour after eBay closed the cases because the items were scanned as delivered (retroactive to when they were actually delivered).

I wrote to him to tell him it looks like his stuff is delivered, if he still doesn't have it, he needs to talk to his post office. Then I provided the information again.

Case closed.

The point is, if you say things like you are going to investigate, they might call your bluff and open cases. I can read people pretty well and when I noticed no delivery scan on those items, I knew I was going to have an INR case, and a day after I noticed this, I was contacted by the buyer. (In other cases I wouldn't worry about no delivery scan, but gut feeling says).

C.

Yeah, the guy had me send to Puerto Rico.  Should have smelled something phishy on the address.   I hope ebay customer service does the right thing.

What are you (or he) asking Customer Service to do? Has he actually filed an Item Not Received dispute?

If he does file an INR, you must upload the tracking number to the case. Assuming that the tracking history shows that the package was forwarded, that should close it in your favor. Should, anyway. Keep us posted, please!

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Thank you.  Not yet as the item was forwarded yesterday.   The buyer just sent me a screenshot of the tracking acting like I shipped to a wrong address, the tracking via ebay shows forwarded and package research case created with the post office, both yesterday.    His address was in Puerto Rico so wondering if it is being forwarded to a mainland address to cause further delay in the actual delivery.  The buyer had feedback of 100% but a post count of only 6

Re: New Scam with Forwarded Mail

Dont feel bad I figured Ebay out long time ago , I am also selling on face book and other sources , as Ebay staff is a BIG SCAMMERS WORLD , I had a buyer asking me where his comic was after 4 days of paying I am in Canada he is in USA now Ebay would have brain this would give them a red flag I called them about this told me provide tracking I said Ok I will I just wont tell buyer I have one , so on October 14th when Ebay finaly had the date up when comic should of arrived the buyer "give me a refund" comic did not arrived I ignored him wanted him to open dispute , so Ebay can see what he is all about . he did next day , soon as it was official I provided tracking , Ebay closed the case buyer leaves me negative , Ebay wont remove it ,What a bunch of Scammers work there ,,Now that will tell you the SCAMMERS ON EBAY IT IS ALL ABOUT nobody just money for them as SELLERS CAN'T leave any negative feedback on Scammer BUYERS -- which is ok but why SCAMMER BUYERS CAN LEAVE YOU UNJUST FEEDBACK AFTER YOU WIN A CASE? because EBAY is the SCAMMERS OF SCAMMERS KING
