I've come across this problem a handful of times over the years of selling here. A buyer purchases several items, combines shipping, receives items, returns multiple items. Ebay requires separate labels to be purchased as their system doesn't recognize combined returns even though they received the items through combined shipping. I offer free returns. I will email the buyer and ask them to only use one label. Usually it isn't a problem. Until today, a customer ignored my message and used multiple labels to sent back each item individually costing me triple in shipping charges now. I contact eBay and they say there is nothing they can do, not even a one off credit for me. My only recourse is to "work it out with the buyer". Really eBay! It's your system that has created this. If an order is combined and shipped out why can't you combine a return? Why make the seller take the brunt of this? So now my only option is to deduct the extra return label used out of their refund which will leave me open for a negative. I honestly am exhausted from this stuff. As if dealing with returns isn't bad enough, the very least eBay could do it make it easier and smoother.

This same issue happened to me this year. I would recommend just issuing the full refund and eat the cost of the shipping labels. The reason is the shipping labels were used and you offer free returns so they can technically use them. Also the buyer can appeal any partial refund you give them and I am going to be up front with you from experience you will lose. Ebay will rule in the favor of the buyer and that partial refund you are thinking of giving for the deduction will go back to the buyer. Yes the buyer can leave a negative in response. Your best course of action is to refund the buyer in full.

The buyer can always appeal it and eBay will refund them the difference from them, not from the seller. I am aware why it happened but I don't agree with it. Ebay can offer combined return shipping labels but they choose not to. They are costing sellers money for no reason. It's a waste of resources. If the original order wasn't shipped combined then I'd understand. If eBay offers combined shipments on the front end but doesn't on the back end then that's just crappy programming.

Ebay can offer combined return shipping labels but....
@spreadlovelikefire
I have to ask. Was the original order paid for individually at full price shipping, and you chose to refund the extra? I am thinking this may account for the return label fiasco.
OR
Did you respond with an invoice via a "request total" feature and bill them accordingly ONCE. Here the buyer would be sent an invoice with shipping already combined in one parcel with one payment.

Neither. They purchased both items at the same time and it combined shipping when they checked out. I didn't send them an invoice nor did I give them a partial refund. Ebay sees it as 2 different transactions and doesn't have an option to combine return shipping, only to combine original shipping labels.
