Multiple orders from same customer...ship together?

I have a brand new ebayer (joined yesterday) that purchased 6 items from me.

They were all purchased and paid for separately.

All are going to the same address.

Shipping is 'free' (yeah, right)

Is there any potential pitfalls to shipping these all together?  I.e., INR scams, etc.?  Ebay protections?

If I DO ship them all separately, what is the advantage?  Obviously shipping cost is the disadvantage....

Or does it not matter as far as shipping TO the customer?  I can't think of a scenario where it would matter if I shipped them together or separately...

Thanks!

I'm presumming,  you have factored in the FS cost into each item price. Since these items were purchased seperately, you should ship each individually, IT is  your best bet to avoid an INR

While shipping all in one shipment may mean you save some money up front the potential monetary and item lost could be significant in the long run.

An INR would never work for a buyer because even if all items are packed together they each have a tracking number assigned and uploaded to eBay. The tracking number is simply the very same number for each item because they are all in one package. The seller should be protected from an INR in this case.

It’s 6 separate transactions so OP would need 6 different tracking numbers since the order wasn’t properly combined. He can’t upload the same tracking number to each individual purchase.

Yes you can-- I just did it a couple of weeks ago.  I had a (relatively new) buyer purchase two Christmas ornaments from me, so I shipped them together and just manually uploaded the tracking for the second one.

It appears that they've put a kind of belt-and-suspenders fix in place for a weird overlap that's been in effect at USPS for some time.

In the past, if you insured a package above a certain amount (previously $200, now $500), the USPS would require the carrier to collect a signature at delivery time, but that was for their own protection (i.e. against insurance claims for non-delivery), and the signature itself was not visible on-line. If the sender paid extra to get Signature Confirmation, then that signature was visible on-line, and SC was required (back then) for sales of $250 or more (now $750).

This led to some weird moments, some of which I witnessed myself at my own PO, where a sender was requesting SC, but the clerk was insisting that it wasn't needed because the insurance would trigger a signature request anyway. Unfortunately the signature that would be collected due to the insurance was not visible as proof of the delivery itself.

So it sounds like eBay is now mashing the two extras together by generating a Signature Confirmation label at no extra charge if you are buying insurance as well. In looking at what was shown in the screenshot, does the "Free" Signature Confirmation go away if the insurance amount is either lowered below $500 or turned off altogether?

@go-bad-chicken

I can't find the verbiage on eBay, but here it is on PayPal

https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/security/seller-protection

Proof of Delivery is online documentation from a shipping company that includes all of the following:

  • The item’s status as delivered.
  • The date the item was delivered.
  • The recipient's address, showing at least the city and state, or city and country, or zip/postal code (or international equivalent). The address information on your shipping receipt must match the address on the Transaction Details page.
  • Signature Confirmation, if the full amount of the payment (including shipping and taxes) is $750 USD or more. This is documentation that can be viewed at the shipping company’s website and indicates that the item was signed for on delivery.

eBay at one time explicitly  stated in the SP policy & MBG that for INRs, that the sellers documentation must be “online viewable”. There are plenty of threads across the boards that suggest that eBay still requires online viewable documentation—I’ve seen numerous threads from sellers who had tracking but it did not show delivery & they obtained written proof from the carrier that the package was delivered but it was rejected by eBay. Most are in the knowledge base IIRC.

That is going to be a problem then. As I stated earlier "How do you purchase the real "Signature Confirmation" using eBay Label. Because anytime I have purchased USPS Insurance with an amount greater than $500.01 it always converts the Signature Confirmation from the cost of $2.45 into FREE, even if I check the Signature Confirmation box?"

Here is a 2 screenshots of the eBay Label page for the postage that I purchased that was insured for $765.00 and I checked the "Signature Confirmation" box so that I would be covered. But due to the insured value eBay's label page converted the "Signature Confirmation" service from $2.45 to FREE.

The 1st screenshot shows: "Signature Confirmation" box is checked, prior to adding the $765.00 of insurance. The charge for "Signature Confirmation" is $2.45.

The 2nd screenshot shows: "Signature Confirmation" box is checked, but now the $765.00 of insurance has been added. The charge for "Signature Confirmation" has been convereted to FREE even though the box for "Signature Confirmation" with a stated charge of $2.45 is still checked.

At this point the only signature of the buyer that I can receive is the one that the USPS provides to me via email in the form of a PDF when I use the "Proof Of Delivery" tab on the USPS Tracking web page.

I am now wondering if eBay even has a clue that this is happening when a seller uses the eBay Label portal to purchase postage, insurance, and signature confirmation.

Re: Multiple orders from same customer...ship together?

Furthermore, the buyer's actual signature is no longer shown with Signature Confirmation service on the USPS Tracking page. What is now displayed is the information  that states: "Signed For By: Joe Blow", but not Joe Blow's actual signature.

I was looking at the USPS Tracking page for a package that I shipped back in December. The sale was for $150.00, and since it was shipped via USPS Priority Mail that included $100.00 in coverage I did not purchase any additional insurance. But the buyer was brand new and had just joined eBay that day, and the buyer's shipping address was to an apartment complex. Because of these 2 factores I did purchase "Signature Confimation" service just to cover myself. The buyer did sign for the package but their signature was not available or viewable online., just the information "Signed For By: Joe Blow". In order to see the buyers actual signature I had to request it via the "Proof Of Delivery" tab.

So is eBay or Pay Pal not going to rule in my favor if the buyer's actual signature in no longer viewable online via the USPS?

Thank you for finding and providing Pay Pal's information.

I think that both Pay Pal as well as eBay need to understand that the USPS has changed the way that they are providing and displaying their signature confirmation information. Otherwise sellers are in jeopardy of automatically loosing INR cases due to the simple fact that the USPS has made some site changes since Pay Pal & eBay's Buyer/Seller Protection programs were iniated.

Re: Multiple orders from same customer...ship together?

If you utilize the Bulk Shipping it will recognize multiple orders from the same customer for you and give you the option to combine.  Easy peasey.  It will give all the combined orders the correct tracking info and you will be all set.   If there was shipping paid for each order, I like to message my customer and refund any overpaid shipping.  Makes us look good, makes the customer happy saving money...all adds up to great feedback.

Yes Signature Confirmation cost $2.45 at the insured values of $0.01 - $500.00

Signature Confirmation only converts to FREE at the insured value of $500.01 or higher.4.png

PayPal tends to ignore USPS changes. I mean they have a 180 buyer protection policy when USPS and I think ups and fedex all purge tracking after 120 days. But as far as eBay goes, let’s tag @Anonymous and see if eBay will accept PDFs. Like I said, some sellers have lost INRs when they have proof of delivery but it wasn’t viewable online.

Thanks for any insight you can provide Trinton!

Re: Multiple orders from same customer...ship together?

@go-bad-chicken

Before USPS upped their insurance signature requirement to $500, it was $200 when they'd obtain a signature.  That method was unacceptable proof as it wasn't online viewable, but could be obtained like your example shows - and SigCon was still available on top.

Looking at your tracking info on the $500+ shipment.... I don't see where it says "This item was signed for by xxx" like it does on your other example (for the new buyer in an apartment bldg)

This is truly odd and seems to be a change on the USPS site too once you pick over $500 of insurance.  The SigCon option disappears.

Its in screen shot #3 here it is called "Signature Searvice" but no online viewable signature

I think what the issue is is that eBay is representing 2 different types of "Signature Confirmation" but using the same radio button/check box for both of them. Because once a seller purchases USPS insurance of $500.01 or greater, then the REAL SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION that eBay & Pay Pal requires sellers to have (viewable online) to protect them from INR cases, is shown but in actuality the REAL SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION is not being applied to that postage purchase.

Unfortunately I have used a couple of screen shot examples in this conversation, so it might be a bit confusing at this point. So for the sake of clarity I will repopst the screen shots IN ORDER.

The 1st screenshot shows:

"Signature Confirmation" box is checked, prior to adding the $765.00 of insurance. The charge for "Signature Confirmation" is $2.45.

The 2nd screenshot shows:

"Signature Confirmation" box is checked, but now the $765.00 of insurance has been added.

The 3rd screenshot shows:

USPS Tracking information page after the package was delivered earlier today. Note that it states "Signature Searvice" but no online viewable signature.

The 4th & 5th screenshot shows:

In order to obtain the buyer's signature I had to use the "Proof Of Delivery" tab. I entered my first and last name as well as my email address. The buyers signature was then sent to me via email in less than 3 minutes. A PDF is located at the bottom of the email. Here are 2 screenshots with the buyers identity blurred out to maintain their privacy.

Here goes. I will try not to bobble it. nerd

The 1st screenshot shows:

"Signature Confirmation" box is checked, prior to adding the $765.00 of insurance. The charge for "Signature Confirmation" is $2.45.1 - $765.00 Shipping label 2.png

The Signature Confirmation that I am given at the time that I purchase USPS postage and USPS insurance for a value greater than $500.01 using eBay labels is not the correct type of Signature Confirmation (viewable online). Aparently this is a problem according to my fellow sellers here in this conversation, since a viewable Signature is required by both eBay & Pay Pal to protect a seller from an INR case .

So how do sellers purchase the REAL REAL Signature Confirmation using eBay labels and not just the "Signature Searvice" which has no online viewable signature?

Will the USPS "Proof Of Delivery" PDF protect sellers against an INR case?

To OP: Be sure to properly combine your order next time. If someone is buying more than one item from you, send them a message asking them to wait for your invoice that will combine all items into a single purchase. Everything will be grouped together, totaled up for you and you would be able to use one single tracking number for each of the items purchased.

I'd still like to know what it is that provoked the error message he's reporting, because I combine shipments all the time, and I've never, not once, ever had that message occur. I'm wondering if it's because I print my label on-line, and I apply the tracking number to all items in the shipment before the package goes out. (I'm assuming here that all the items were purchased by the same buyer ID.)

If the package gets Accepted at the PO first (and thus the tracking number is validated as now In Transit), then I could see the tracking number maybe getting rejected with that error message if the OP tries to apply it to other items after the fact. But if you've printed the label yourself and not yet gotten the number validated by a USPS scan, then I would expect you can apply it to other items bought by the same buyer that went into the same box. That certainly works for me.

here's the deal.  This was a nightmare order from the start.

I got the error message on 3 of the 6 orders.  However, this makes sense because they actually entered two separate addresses....one for 3 items and a different address for the other 3.  I initially stated that they were all going to the same address because at first glance, they both looked very similar...example (these are not the real addresses):

1664 Lake Street, APT 634, Anaheim, CA 90032

4553 Sherman Street, STE 634, Anaheim, CA 90032

The identical Apt. vs. Ste. numbers seemed to be quite a coincidence considering the street addresses were completely different but i had just glanced at the city/apt numbers which matched.  In the meantime I was thinking, "Does this person only rent spaces with the same apartment or suite number?".

I wanted to clear something up:  You CAN indeed add tracking numbers to additional shipments without any combining (which is what Ive been used to)...in this particular case, because there were two separate addresses, ebay wouldn't let me add the tracking numbers to the shipments that had a different ship-to address (so bravo to ebay on error-proofing that one).  I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it would only let me add it to three of the six shipments because I initially was under the impression all addresses were the same as I originally posted.

Ultimately I checked both addresses on the Paypal Payments and both addresses were CONFIRMED addresses, so I figure I am safe with PayPal seller protection.  I didn't use signature confirmation.

I also emailed the customer because the same APT/STE numbers had me thinking they might have made a mistake when entering their addresses (I dont believe in coincidences), but I had to ship before they responded.  Ultimately they wrote back and confirmed the two addresses were correct.
