I rarely have someone cancel after doing a buy it now order (for which I require immediate payment), but this week I've had 2-3 of them occur just minutes after they do the purchase. The most recent one stated that they didn't think the color would work for them (it was a black & white shirt, so not a lot of variation in colors for that). S0 - just wondering - once they hit the buy button, is Ebay showing them a list of "You could have had this for cheaper" items?? Or something similar that encourages the cancellation? Seems like that would be really foolish, but I'm not putting it past them! Is there something else going on that I'm missing?
Also - I notice when I do the cancellation, it says "The buyer has up to 10 days to confirm", but when I've contacted the buyers, they say nothing shows up for them to confirm - it just sends them a cancellation email. What's up with that??

Evening CJS,
Thinking that this is more common these days than ever before.
So many sites have this option...such as "You Have 30 Minutes To Cancel this order"
The industry as a whole I think it is easier to have this option than to have an order processed and THEN have to cancel it. Alot of impulsive spending when you actually don't have to reach into your wallet here on the internet.
Last of all I think the email notification is a hangover (can I say that) from earlier days when we sent a cancellations request...now it is simply automated but the busy ebay techs are so OVERWHELMED they haven't caught up to that work load yet...sarcasm here.

I spoke with a customer who purchased an item and then within 5 minutes cancelled. She did confirm she saw a message from eBay with an item similar to mine but less money.
Thanks so much.

Gasp, Mr C, a hangover!
Oh, wait, you mean a residual effect, remaining element from the previous process?
Gotcha!

Is that like take two aspirin and call me in the morning?
Maybe slide some of that shine over to them. Hair of the dog, you know!

Annoying-- but better than having a Dispute to handle.
Since you've had a spate of these, and there was a change in what we can put in our listings about http/https whatever that was supposed to mean, have you looked at your listings on a smartphone.
There are some weird changes to listings on mobiles. And our customers are NOT seeing all the information we try to give them.

That auctiva counter might be part of the problem.
And your (very attractive) layout has a lot of coding too.
I looked up that Funky People dress and it doesn't look too bad. All the pretty logos disappear and there are no measurements unless you spot a tiny grey arrow that takes you to a different screen.

OP, while many times that happens because a buyer is shown similar items that are cheaper, I think some buyers are also paying and asking for a cancel to get out of receiving an unpaid item strike.
They are taking a chance that the seller will accept the cancellation, as the seller does not have to, but many believe the request is a done deal, just because they requested it, and do not know that the seller can deny the request.
Most sellers would accept it, but they don't have to.

Thanks for your input. I have no idea where that auctiva counter came from! I haven't used those in years! I know - it's such a shame that we put a lot of work into our listings & then Ebay hides the essential parts - like measurements - that they tell everyone that they should include! I've had to explain to so many people how to click on the description arrow after they ask me for info that is already in there. I don't know why anyone would ever shop much on their phone - unless they don't have access to a computer or tablet. I just get frustrated when I try to search for anything on the Ebay mobile site.

And to make it worse - they immediate pay, and cancel and Paypal gets to KEEP .30 to make up for those Quarterly dismal revenues. And you are out the listing cost and paypal's fee - real nice!
I don't even mind them showing similar items while doing a search - that's all part of finding the best deal. But really - AFTER they've purchased???? What is the advantage of doing that? Ebay just gets less in fees when the sale is for a lesser amount! If they're going to show anything AFTER the sale, it should be more items from the same seller to encourage combined shipping! I wish they would at least implement a small (.50?) charge to cover the PP fees & for our trouble to cancel & relist. Yes, I would prefer them to cancel before I ship the item rather than waiting & sending it back, but I would REALLY prefer them to get ALL the information BEFORE purchasing!!

I've never in all my years on eBay experienced as many returns and cancellations as I have in this past week it's sheer insanity.

Because they don't.
Many younger people, the ones we Boomers complain are always on their phones, don't have desktop or laptop computers.
When your phone allows you telephone service, free long distance texting, books, movies, music, radio and 'podcasts', as well as internet searches for whatever you can google, why pay $2000+ internaet charges for a computer when you can pay $50 a month instead and keep it in your purse at all times?
I find I read books on my phone when I am travelling and I've been known to text.
