Layaway

This was brought up by another poster asking if a seller could offer layaway.  I believe most told him no, it was not possible to do so.

But I have seen it offered in the fine diamond jewelry categories, and here is one example of how a seller is choosing to handle it.

Layaway Plan

Choose which plan you wish to use from the three below:

1. I just want to delay my payment". Delayed payment (buy it now but take up to two weeks to pay)

2. One Month Plan (payments divided into 2 parts and invoices sent every two weeks.)

3. Two Month Plan (payments divided into 4 parts and invoices sent every two weeks.)

We will send you invoices directly to your paypal account. No interest is ever charged and you may pay off as early as you like.

Please note that once you've placed an item on lay-a-way, it is not refundable.

Re: Layaway

I've also seen the partial pay icon when I've bought more than one item from a seller, and had to return one. When the seller refunds the returned item, and issues the refund for the one item, the icon changes from paid to partially paid. It drives me crazy actually, because I paid for what I have. The partial refund on a return also creates a partial paid.

Paypal credit isn't a layaway plan though, its a credit line. Virtual credit card. Works just like a credit card, the buyer pays the seller in full using paypal credit and then they make monthly payments to paypal credit.

I have  not seen any mention of policy regarding for or against a seller offering a layaway.  The partial payment recieved icon would imply layways are acceptable if spelled out in detail of the payment section/dessciption.

Please show me in the policies where IT states not allowed.

Ok, imadocent, here it is from the Payments Policy:

What are the guidelines?

Allowed

Allowed

  • PayPal

To make checkout faster, you'll now log in to your PayPal account on the checkout page. To skip PayPal login altogether, select the checkbox that says "Remember me for faster checkout on eBay" on the PayPal login box.

  • PayPal Credit

  • Credit card or debit card processed through the seller's Internet merchant account

Your payment is safe and secure. You can choose to save your card to your eBay account. Remove a card anytime in your My eBay account settings.

  • Payment upon pickup

If you offer payment upon pickup, you'll also need to offer one of the approved electronic methods, and may include this statement in your listing: "Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup."

    Not allowed

    Not Allowed

    • Sending cash through the mail

    • Sending cash or money orders through instant, point-to-point cash transfer services (that aren't banks) such as Western Union or MoneyGram

    • Mailing checks or money orders (except for items in categories specifically permitted)

    • Paying through bank-to-bank transfers (except for items in categories specifically permitted)

    • Paying by "topping off" a seller's prepaid credit or debit card

    • Paying using online or other payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy

    • Asking buyers to contact you for additional payment methods, or including misleading or unclear payment information

    • Offering a payment method to some buyers and not to others

    • Discouraging buyers from using any payment method you specified in the listing

    • Discouraging buyers from using eBay's accepted payment methods

    • Asking buyers to pay using a method not mentioned in the listing

    • Paying with Virtual or Cryptocurrencies

    • Placing limitations on payment methods you accept. For example:

      • "I accept PayPal but do not accept credit card payments through PayPal"

      • "I only accept PayPal if the bid amount is greater than $15"

These rules apply to all transaction-related correspondence between a seller and buyer, as well as to the listings.

In addition, you aren't allowed to make statements such as:

    • "Contact us for payment information."

    • "Contact us for other payment methods."

    • "Contact us for your preferred payment method."

    • "Buyers may request to pay by check or money order."

Why does eBay have this policy?

This policy helps to create a successful shopping and selling experience by encouraging online payment methods that are safe, easy to use, and offer strong protections for members.

I would advise against such payment procedure, unlesss the seller is safe with such risk.

As you see, there is no mention that Ebay allows the seller to run their own layaway.

@Anonymous

There is no section in the rules on Ebay Layaway; however, I found ample materials spelling out the Paypal Credit is the only approved method of layaway on Ebay.  I believe the partial payment icon referenced here is a hold over, just like the seller block for buyers with -1 feedback.  Please, could you weigh in on this?  Very grateful for your help!

Paypal credit is not layaway. Its a digital credit card. It cannot be used to make payments to a seller. The buyer has to have a big enough credit line to pay for the entire purchase at once and the seller gets paid in full immediately and ships the item. It is not a layaway plan.

Hi Jen,

I absolutely agree. What I meant was that ebays/PP version of a layaway was addressed by allowing folks to make payments to PP Credit over time.

The key is the customer gets the goods...seller gets paid etc. So folks can kinda treat this as a layaway in the sense of instalment payments, but it's all AFTER the sale is made here at ebay and completed.

Another reason I meantion the PP Credit is it typically has the no interest options for $99 or more purchases if paid within 6 months.

I have paypal credit.  You have to have some history on ebay in order to qualify for it.  Then they start you out real low until you can demonstrate that you are making payments on time.  After that they will raise your limits.

Paypal is not going to just let anyone take on a line of credit with them hoping you will pay it back.

Just like a credit card not everyone qualifies for a line of credit.

So true.  A buyer will not see the Paypal Credit logo on a listing unless the buyer already has Paypal Credit, OR they would like the buyer to have it because they feel they would qualify.

@missjen831  is right; it is not layaway in the traditional sense of the word, in that you keep making payments for the item until it is paid for, and then you receive it.  It is like using your credit card, item is paid for with one payment, then the buyer makes payments to PP Credit, just as a buyer might makes payment on their credit card.    It has been said, though, that that is the only form of layaway allowed on Ebay, so that is where that came from.

The shipping metric should not be a factor until the item has been completely paid for and the item paid icon is shown.

But the timeframe for a dispute on Ebay is thirty days.  Layaway would not have had the item completely paid for in that timeframe.  That throws it to Paypal.  They have 180 days, possibly item is still not paid for.

Buyer is losing buyer protection.

Trust me, it drives the seller nuts as well, as that one item continues to show up as 'umpaid' even though it's shipped & delivered lol

Even major B&M stores these days only offer Layaway at specific times like Holiday Season.

I guess they think everyone & his dog has a cc

I can't see how eBay wouldn't benefit from developing a new choice of payment called "Layaway". The customer selects it, selects the duration. Ebay programs invoicing according to duration. When paid...it ships.

LOL maybe they do!  You are right about B & M stores~~I recall, for instance, that K Mart did away with their layaway for several years.  But brought it back in recent years.  I have a friend that always used their layaway and she was very upset when they stopped that.

Re: Layaway

Ebay only allows Paypal Credit, which is not the traditional layaway in that the buyer receives the item up front due to Paypal paying the seller the full amount; this backs up their MBG and the 30 day timeframe that is allowed for a case.

It's part of the changing evolution of years past on Ebay, no more money orders, no cash in the mail, no more asking the buyer to buy insurance if they want it, Buyer Protection.

There is no provision for layaway due to the shipping metric (although some may fudge that) and the Buyer Protection policy.  Ebay can read messages and that can be a clue.

Hi @castlemagicmemories, the partial payment icon is primarily for when payment is split between two sources (ie. PayPal balance and another form). It can also be triggered by a partial refund for the transaction. I would recommend PayPal credit for anyone looking for something similar to traditional layaway. At this time, they offer no interest or minimum payments for transactions over $99 if the purchase is paid in full within 6 months, so can be very convenient for your upcoming Holiday shopping slight smile

Edit: I did some additional digging into this and the partial payment icon should only trigger with a partial refund. Disregard my earlier statement about partial payments and sorry for any confusion!

Specific PayPal credit questions would be best addressed by PayPal. I can't speak to the criteria they look at, only suggest it as an option to investigate.
