Eh, no one has any money. Consumers are broke, with continued greed-based inflation and a completely pointless interest rate hike. Peeps are using their Amex cards to buy groceries now. I'm amazed anyone's selling anything at all. There needs to be a price freeze and we need to get rid of the Federal Reserve.

I love how folks over simplify things.  Economics are the area of PHD's and Masters and folks tend speak from their own pocket or that of jibe they hear on TV.  We've one party wanting make people think the economy is terrible on literally a daily basis and THAT rings through consumers... YET some places doin' just fine, Walmart Online now one of you're largest competitors for DOLLARS is up a whopping 16% online alone in revenues.  Folks need "get it" its NOT about PRODUCT COMPETITION at ANY third party venues its all about competition in sales for THE DOLLAR.  Most businesses in sales consign goods under terms and that gives them an ENORMOUS competitive advantage over folks who buy then sell.  Many big names are not in a growth pattern at all and they run sales like you would not believe, the deals.  They could care less what the products are, they consign goods and compete for the dollar, not the product.

Consumers SEE and HEAR areas of the economy that have real problems IF they care to take the time to understand.  Housing, Rental, Automobile prices, high ticket items have not come down to where they should given the rest of economy SHORT of those items considered commodities which DO impact many items, that's due to a war and that of a political party instilling economic uncertainty and FEAR intentionally not that the other side hasn't done that in the past either.  But instead of voters and citizens DEMANDING BETTER they just choose sides based upon which is thought to be "Less Worse" and THAT is a formula for LOW RESULTS EVERYTIME.   Do you see people picketing in the streets?  Nope, that might take away from entertainment time and maybe even be dangerous.

Temu is BOOMING having made nearly as much revenue as eBay in it's first year.  I hear from so many people the name is spreading like wildfire.  Here people set the prices that THEY figure they want, 200% margins... Whatever, good luck in a global economy competing for THE MONEY not the product.

Everybody tends want blame eBay yet likely have not spoke with many other sellers on other venues.  Third party sales by the homebrew op's are down and they are down because BIG entities are competing for the MONEY.  I don't do lots of shopping but my lady does and CONSISTENLY is finding sellers at eBay are 40-70% higher priced than what she can find in "Bargain" at retailers online and off, not a big surprise...  Many sellers take advantage of those same sales doing arbitrage and then wanting sell same stuff for more money.  Consumers are not stupid when they consistently are seeing high prices and sellers who refuse to even barter they will ALWAYS go to best deal.  I watch items here often and viola, 5%, 10% discounts on prices that are already above retail, they do same with TEMU, buy there try sell here.  One could say it sort of poisons pricing here, one reason I've said before, eBay needs to think about providing consumers an OPTIONAL display format like Amazon, one listing, multiple sellers.  That also helps out mobile device real-estate which is a HUGE problem for a site like eBay with millions of sellers all needing visibility to sell.

As I said before, Walmart is one of the biggest problems now for third party sellers as again, they compete for the dollar not the product BUT they demand low price from ALL their delisting, overstock warehouses and the DEALS can be UNREAL.  Said this before, last year already, I bought a QLED TV for $280 to my door, 55" JVC all the bells and whistles, same TV online or at stores well in excess of $700.  Refurb? Nope, brand new and come from a JVC liquidator of product that's delisting.  $800 MSRP Charbroil Grill, $199 delivered to Walmart for us to pick up, same grill at Lowes?  $599 on sale.  Was missing the parts kit, Charbroil sent us a replacement Two days to get here.  This holiday for anybody who cares read real financial news is going to see big business seller op's vying in HUGE fashion for the Dollar.

eBay can't do a darned thing about how the myriads of entities out there VYE to snatch the DOLLAR nor can ANY SELLER compete against consigned goods, especially the glut of them that currently exist just not possible.  In a way its like the environment, more toxic be that pricing, TRUST etc a place is the less the more folks go elsewhere.  I've suggested several times that eBay set up "Sales Days" monthly/weekly whereby sellers who WILL COMMIT items to deep discounts (That's 50% or better) and get traffic get back in here.  No price fixing, any seller who price fix no longer can participate, end of story.

eBay trying to let sellers know, "Lower you're prices" only result in sellers screaming about the fee's and margins yet for the most part fee's and margins at eBay have been its seller joy.  It's allowed sellers to make margins (or revenue) far in the way beyond that or traditional retail/eTail.

I don't pretend know all the answers BUT odds are third party buy/sell rather privateer op's are and will continue to be on the wane and we've governments around the world who WANT THAT.

If you have an Amex Blue, you absolutely should use it to buy groceries. 6% cash back on up to $6k/yr. Just make sure to PIF every month. I added my wife as an AU to mine for the sole purpose of having her using it for groceries.

As for sales being slow here, there are other way to sells stuff. Use them. eBay ought to be doing whatever they can to increase sales - they'll need the money to pay the Steiners and the EPA.

That would make my day if those two sales paid for the other unsold 18 items.

Are you also planning to reduce the number of listings you have?

I don't see how getting risk of your store will lower your overhead if you have to pay more in listing fees.

Same. Why source when the economy is a big Squid Game?

I have stopped sourcing and pretty much am focusing on all of my death piles. Saving lots of money and time by only listing what I have.

Um, I get my economics from books and talks by heterodox economists. It's always the economy.

@meme6253  you might consider diversifying inventory if possible. Your store has a lot of the same basic inventory with a sell thru rate worse than mine. It is hard to keep stockpiling when inventory numbers are rising ahead of number of sales.

I just picked up 4 pallets of product I am sorting thru now while making decisions on listing,  recycling and/or  trashing. When I find myself shaking my head at items, I trash/recycle/donate. Some decisions are quite easy. The only good thing is that I paid nothing for the opportunity to sort thru it. Not a consignment deal, but free stuff. With somewhat limited storage space left, I have to be choosy. Real estate can become valuable in this game we play.

Good luck moving forward.

Indeed. I used to buy almost my entire wardrobe here on eBay because I could find good prices on used clothing in good condition. But these days? I haven't bought any clothing on eBay in years now. Why would I when I can get the same/a similar thing brand new with tags from TJ Maxx or Marshalls for the same price people are asking for used stuff?

That I will not do except for a few choice items, Lowering prices is not a matter of swallowing one's pride, It is a matter of do I give ebay all my earnings or just a portion!

Re: Keep Listing, Keep Listing, Keep Stockpiling!!

Heterodox economics are basically assumptions & theories...  My ladies Brother's wife is a PHD in the stuff and her kids followed suit in college, one here and one in the UK.  Want hear realities just park on the wall at Thanksgiving.  The USA is SEVERELY lacking skilled trade workers even to the point Biden's big chip factory is bringing workers in from Taiwan.  There's not a construction firm in America right now that has the numbers of trades folks to do the work... Heck, down by our camp at a Walmart Carpenters, Plumbers, Electrical Union folks are standing there with signs seeking folks to apprentice at far better than minimum wages.  If I were young I'd be all over that.  Same with cars, reason rates are so high at garages is lack of workers.  In Wisconsin where they normally run three shifts for Cow Milk they are running one, not enough workers and dumping millions of gallons a week down the drain.  Friend down at camp, does CNC, 12 hours a day four days a week and is KILLING IT make $$$ as they cant find anyone who cares make parts.

Its not the economy that's all screwy is the citizens wanting a lifestyle that's unsustainable and BOTH parties as well economists are well aware its unsustainable.  The nations lust to obtain things and be entertained is the EXACT opposite of what made the land.  That's why in modern times immigration has become so successful here in our history.  Heck, if the nation simply went towards economic fairness among minorities the economy would explode with wealth.  Trickle down economics IS trickle down lifestyles and WHY what was a one working household now has less wealth when two adults are working.  The equation is IGNORE WEALTH, build millionaires and let them trickle it down.  America now has 22 million millionaires commanding 158 trillion dollars not to mention corporations paying nowhere near what YOU PAY in percentiles.  In compare we've 750 Billionaires commanding 5.7 Trillion.  Welcome to The Country Club and the man actually with Country Clubs made compadres ever richer.  Mitch McConnel is up over 20+ Million over those 4 years... Yeah, illusions count.

If we simply filled jobs now open with workers, add 7 trillion to the economy in as many years.  All out there to read via credible sources.  Read of Canada, UK, Australia, Germany to name few that are immigrating people in huge fashion, skilled, unskilled, training and then some.  Immigration has always resulted in innovation, HEAPS of US Fortune 500 companies including eBay founded by folks who immigrated.  That US History but now we've two parties who have both recognized how completely out of the loop information and knowledge wise Americans CHOOSE to be, so they've made it a game.

Re: Keep Listing, Keep Listing, Keep Stockpiling!!

If only a few things are selling, list more things like that.

Add Promoted Listing Standard (at 2%) to the oldest stuff on your shelves.

What price range is selling? List more things in that price range.

Look at your records.

How were sales in September 2022?  2019? 2018? Ignore the pandemic surge in sales in 2020 and 2021.

Don't compare September to August or January.

Yep and good idea pay attention to numerous other retailers who've been going absolutely sales crazy in what they offer.  At the end of the day change has come and that's competing for the dollar, as I said.  Retailers pretty much care less what products sell as long as things sell as they consign merchandise under terms.  That's been standard fair for before I was born.  Did the same thing moons back when I was in a game store (and then some) with partners, we care less if new video games or dvd's etc sold or not as we'd price protection on all of it as it was all consigned.  We used it to bring people into the store making the money on other things they'd buy more so the consign.  Now on the web ESPECIALLY due to Walmarts success buckets of big retail are blowing out delisted/overstock consign and the deals are just incredible.

Folks are blowing out the doors on the deals but they've finite money and economics (FEAR) of the day has made for wiser shoppers.

Re: Keep Listing, Keep Listing, Keep Stockpiling!!

Sales have been great all year. Maybe it's time to switch categories and sell something different. It's been nothing but up this year. Gross: 14.6% up year over last. Net: 21.7% up year over last. Obviously this isn't my true net as I'm using the net from eBay but regardless, still in the green.
