Item Not Received Due To Customs Fees

Hi....got a new issue that we have never had before.  A buyer opened an item not received case and I looked at the tracking.  It was going to the UK and the tracking said that the item was held waiting for the buyer to pay the customs fees.  She was apparently notified on Nov. 2 to pay the fees.  It was "out for delivery".  She makes no mention of this in her claim....only "please advise when the item will arrive"!  I added the tracking to the case and told her she needs to pay the fees.  Can I just have this closed out??  Have not had this happen before.

Call eBay and have them look at the tracking. This might take multiple calls. Buyer is refusing to pay the fees. Point out you have been in contact with the buyer showing them that the item is being held in customs waiting for them.

old scam, say they didn’t get it, get a refund and then go collect the item.

You are dealing with a customs hanger. ebay will find the dispute in favor of the buyer then they'll trot right down to customs and pick the item up. Its one of the main reasons USA sellers no longer sell international...

Well that wouldn't be fair since the tracking shows that the item was "out for delivery" and is still sitting there!  I will call eBay.  Was trying to avoid that!

Thanks all!

Unfortutely, Bubbleman may be right. If ebay refuses to help you I would see if theres a way to get it returned to you. This is one of the many reasons I no longer sell international.

What is the item and the value?

It was a dress....the value is $41.99 plus shipping.  I believe we charged $18 to the UK.  It's hard to afford refunding that amount right now since around November 6 our sales kind of fell off the cliff!  We are down over $1500 for the last 31 days compared to Octobers numbers.  We are still doing everything we were doing before....listing, markdowns, promo offers.  Not sure what happened.  It may be that eBay is directing traffic towards the sellers using the new payment system?

What is the official Ebay stance when a package is being held for customs fees and the buyer doesn't pick up? Can the buyer  file an INR and win? If so, that's not right.

Would being "held for customs fees" or whatever verbiage, be considered the same as delivered, especially since the buyer was notified?

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

Well amazingly enough...ebay found the case in my favor!  This has been such a bad month, at least ONE good thing happened!

Oh, good! I guess that answers the question about items held for payment of customs fees.

It would be nice if that situation was addressed in the official policy concerning INRs - Items shown as held for customs pickup are considered delivered - that sort of wording.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

That would have been nice as I wouldn't have had to become as stressed this morning!  Unfortunately, I believe this will count against us in the metrics... ugh!

Hi @southern*sweet*tea, sorry I'm a little late to the party but I'm glad to hear this has been resolved! I can confirm that a buyer is required to pay any applicable customs fees and a seller would not be at fault if the buyer refused to do pay this. We would refer to the tracking information or documentation provided by the seller to offer protection in this kind of situation.

trinton when did ebay begin looking at tracking on international orders to decide disputes they'd never look in the past.  If thats policy now there is really no need for ebays GSP program that was its sole reason for coming into existence to combat the fraud taking place because ebay refused to look at posted international tracking information...

I have just had this very same situation on a $1200 item going to the UK, case was opened against me, I called CS and the agent that I spoke to simply said that once ebay can see that the package made it to custons and the reason for non delivery was down to the buyer having failed to pay VAT & Duty ebay considers the package "delivered", he closed the case there and then, if the buyer fails to pay then there is a fighting chance that I will also get the product back too, i'll wager that they scurry down to FedEx pronto.

Thats nice that they did that and if thats how its now going to be handle really no sense in using GSP.  Custom hangers were the reason GSP even came into exsistance....
