Inventory Resourcing

When you're out widgeting/resourcing/junking (whatever it is you call it)

......And you run across a "deal".  Do you take them "all"?  Or do you leave some for the others huddled around the area whose antennae have gone on full ALERT that there is a lady shoving armloads into her cart?

There's a clearance aisle trick **bleep**

Take the ten and put the rest behind whatever is on a lower shelf.

Hey, they're still on a shelf **bleep**

If I come back same or next day to get the rest, 75% of the time they are still there.

I also have no qualms about grabbing other reseller's stashes.

All is **bleep**

Re: Inventory Resourcing

At a regular store - Buy it all - donate one or two or three - sell the rest.

Just took my second SUV load this week of new with tags and very gently used items to a Salvation Army store.  (New toys, new craft supplies, new kitchen items, hardcover books, new clothing, gently used clothing).  Does my heart good to share with others.

Some things I just don't list on eBay anymore, too much competition, too many returns.

I hope those truly in need get some of it.

In Wally Word  the end of June one year, we saw Areogardens for $10........regularly $80........ We bought 40.......hurt me as I usually won't pay more than $5 for anything. Better Half is willing to spend more. Immediately put them up at $50-60, nothing sold.  I was downcast.  About October they started selling and didn't quit til all were gone.  All I then heard was "I told you so".

I had to google what an Aero Garden is  ~  Had never heard of them!  lol

About 1/2 way back North, I realized I should have pointed out that even if I had not purchased them all - the cranky dude in the back would have grabbed whatever was left and there still would not have been any for him or his cashiers.

Or am I still missing the point as he said?

No, but the point that escapes him (and I know they're not experts in logic there, though no one expects them to be) is that they already set a price on each piece that you have met fair and square. That's all that's expected of you in the transaction. If they wanted to set a selling limit (which they're entitled to, but didn't), they should have done so. There is literally no difference between one person buying 40 articles and 40 people buying one apiece. (Well, okay, I suppose there is more sales tax on 40 individual items, plus the store might need to provide 40 shopping bags instead of one loaner basket, but still...)

If I find a killer deal, I will usually buy it all, but when shopping on eBay, I might be a little more circumspect. I don't want to tip off the seller that he's way undervaluing his items, so I might buy just a few and make sure that my assumptions are correct: that the products are what I think they are and that they will sell. (I buy and sell internationally, so I may find good items in Europe that are not being listed in English or sold in the U.S.) If everything looks good, I'll either return for the rest or (if I really want to stay under the seller's radar) have a couple friends or relatives make further purchases for me.

There's nothing wrong with buying in quantity (especially if you're not demanding a discount for doing so), and especially when you're willing to undertake the task of individual resale and they simply want to be rid of it.

Thanks for that perspective.

For some reason, the "only" thought I had was to grab the whole basket.  lol

As it turns out, there are some really neat towels in this bunch and very few dupe(s), which makes it a pain to list.

I am thinking some for stocking stuffers with a candle or something fun.  If we do Secret Santa again this year, I Can send someone a nice towel, some thread and a hot wheels car!  Goodie, right?  😁

Maybe selling in small lots of 2-3-or-4 would help lessen the workload. Can you coordinate colors or themes on the singles?

Re: Inventory Resourcing

After reading these responses, I thank God that I am not so selfish.  I was embarrassed by many of the comments.  I think one of the problems in the world today is that too many people think only of themselves.  Sharing is not in their vocabulary.  The world would be a better, kinder place if people were half as interested in others as they are in themselves.  There's always enough to go around.  Shame on you!

@dottie1986

Seriously?

I was berated by a cashier who called me a name after I offered her (3) of the towels (any, she could choose) after I had paid, at my expense.  If that is not sharing, then please let me know what the definition is?

It would not let me edit my post above - ran out of time:

ETA:  Thank you for your perspective.  I am guessing we will need to agree to disagree, but I do appreciate your honesty.  If you knew me, you would know that I am a lot of things, have many faults, but I am not selfish.  Thank you, again.

@coffeebean832

Not sure yet how to do these - was thinking groupings, etc - Might roll them up with a nice bow, add a candle, a nice chocolate bar and use them for co-worker gifts, sunday school secret santa, book-club holiday exchange and take some into the animal shelter that DD and I work at 1 day a week - I think we will do a gift draw again this year.   Maybe get some colorful utensils and slide one into each towel and forego the candle?  There is a gal in town that sells these hand painted oven shelf pullers are they are so cute - maybe get some of thoses, etc?  (I never know what to do for these gift exchanges, so this might be perfect!  Ooooh...maybe a towel with a $5 starbucks card and a cocoa packet?  lol)

Definitely will sell them as lots with the thread and embroidery stuff(s) and yarn.  Santa will be here before you know it!

Re: Inventory Resourcing

i magically conjure bunch of incoherent words and my stock appears 😆
seriously, idk, i don't "widget or junk" (or flea market, garage sale, army and navy, pawn shop...) but the answer is no, i don't normally take all, unless all is only a few then yes.

The great truth is there isn't one
And it only gets worse since that conclusion...

Re: Inventory Resourcing

The only time I would have an issue with clearing it out is if the items were considered essential, like toilet paper or food and they were scarce. But from what I quickly read, the items you bought were just everyday common non essential items that didn’t have any shortage of.

In my late teens I used to hunt around toy stores for collectible action figures and such with my brother. Obviously for profit. You wouldn’t believe the work, research, and time I put into it. It was basically like a job. Many times I would drive super far for things only to come back empty handed. Big risk sometimes equal big reward I guess. But whenever I would hit a motherload like OP, my rule would be to get as much as I can while being as stealth as possible. Reason being is because it’s very likely I will see these store employees again… and I MIGHT need their assistance in the future. Legally I wouldn’t be doing anything wrong making a big fuss to clear everything and draw all the attention. But that might potentially burn the bridges with those workers. There were times I would just buy in 2-3 batches and go to a different cashier to ring me up.

Although nowadays when I’d be at a supplier and I’m about to clear out a certain stock but I see one of my competitors needing some, I’d help them out a bit. It’s more of a strategic move to keep the respect and coexist. Because they’ll reciprocate as well if needed. Either that or I’ve become soft. Maybe it’s a keep your enemies closer thing. Who knows

Re: Inventory Resourcing

We too order from suppliers, but they usually tell me how many are available, etc.  We do buy pallets from our former warehouse suite-mate and he will tell me what is available (take the whole pallet or none - he does not break them apart).

When I go to Cincy for day job mtgs, I love popping in this thrift as they always have an array of stuff(s) and you never know what might be there.  Usually I find new puzzles and lots of seasonal items - I was hoping for some Thanksgiving decor, but all they had was Easter and a tiny bit of Christmas.  Lots of stuff(s) in Bins.  I passed on quite a few things this time, mostly as I did not know how much I had spent.

I also go to a place downtown called the Hippo and it is wonderful - same thing, you never know what you will find and everything is sold by "donation".  I love going there and supporting them.  I usually find near post cards and bookmarks and magnets - goofy stuffs that I tuck into cards/letters, etc.

When I arrived at that area of the store, no one was there.  Not until I started filling my cart.

If I am buying just for us and not for re-sale, I typically only buy a few.  If I am buying to re-sale, I do typically buy them all.  Especially being that far from home - there was not the possibility of going back today or next week, etc.

Sorry if the posts/threads offended some.  Still have 1 in college and trying to generate enough to cover those expenses on top of everything else.
