Interesting Observation ; Only Promoted Listings Showing

So sales slowed down past few weeks right, no big deal.  Some times it consumer confidence fluxuations, weather, events, seasons, etc...  Since I'm full-time business as some of you are or even serious part-time I keep a keen observations on listing performance and competition.  It's common for me to search my own products logged in and not logged in.  I used the promoted listing feature on most products at a low rate, pay to play I guess.  I get a few sales via this system, but not consistent, no big deal.

This is where it gets interesting.  So a drop in sales(20%) and a uptick in promoted listing sales, that's odd usually it is linearly correlated (Mathematics background, yes I use stats with my business).  I do a search of products that are using the promoted listing system and turns out, only the promoted (Sponsored) listing shows up in the search results.  The native listing are nowhere to be found.  So I conduct a search of items that are not apart of the promoted listing program.  These listings show up as normal and none of which are apart of the rolling blackout.  While it's no secret and apart of the user agreement that eBay can control when listings can be shown.  Kind of irks you at first, but it's their business and service, I'll give them that part.  However, eliminating all my native listings and only showing promoted listings to ensure conversion of the promoted listing program is....a bit sketchy and dabbling a grey area of fleecing your sellers.

Thoughts? Not intended to bash eBay by this post.  I never been done wrong by CSR and I have conducting many sales through eBay.  I mean, from a business perspective, if this is how it's going work, would it behoove of me to cancel promoted listings?

Re: Interesting Observation ; Only Promoted Listings Showing

I did when I had it activated, but it was difficult to measure.  I no longer use the program.  How much of a role the additional sponsored listing played a role is tricky.  I suppose if you are selling in a saturated market where a ton of listings come up for a particular item, then the additional listing could play to your advantage.  However, I have shifted focus to providing  better and more informed listing compared to my competitors instead of relying sponsored listings.

It appears that the sponsored listings show up accordingly now without adversely affecting or removing the native listing.  You only pay eBay when the item sells via the sponsored listing.  Can't hurt for you to try I suppose.   If the sponsored listing provided off-site advertisement, then I would say it most certainly would be worth it, but I'm not certain if such a mechanism is implemented.  I believe it is all in house advertising.

Re: Interesting Observation ; Only Promoted Listings Showing

A large problem is that many buyers/sellers(especially ones who have been here a while) associate the new 'sponsored listings' with the old 'sponsored ads' that would take you off-site, so a lot won't click on them.

They should have called them Promoted Listings. Sponsored sounds like those listings are keeping ebay afloat.

Merely 'not logged in' isn't enough.  If you really want to get a better, objective view, I would suggest that you turn cookies off - and clearing them - on your browser, too.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

Re: Interesting Observation ; Only Promoted Listings Showing

I thought I could sidestep the Promoted Listings deal by adding bold headings on my more expensive items. I figured the $6 additional would be better than paying the Promoted Listings prices. Didnt work...my listings STILL dont show. So now I'm out $36 in additional listing fees and my stuff is still not showing up. This Powerseller has hit an all time low for sales since the Promoted Listings Concept has recently been intro'd.

My listings always showed up top of the heap before...the 3rd, 4th or 5th on the search roster everytime. Now ZERO.

At first, I thought I had ticked eBay off in some way or fashion. Did listing items on Facebook MarketPlace  or other online sites tick them off???

Was I rude to a Customer at one point?

It's hard not to feel this is personal in some way. I work so hard to get my items to top notch and my ads also, but now I am faced with a factor I cannot control that is ruining me.

Re: Interesting Observation ; Only Promoted Listings Showing

First they nag you to open a store.... open a store, your sales will be awesome! Then they tell you to promote listings to get in front of customers. Did both and my sales are around the same as they were two years ago, before I opened the store. I don't sell big ticket items, so it is becoming a chore to pay the ebay bill every month. The first two months all I sold was through promoted listings and I couldn't find my other listings. Something stinks around here and I'm thinking that eBay does a LOT of false advertising to get you to purchase certain items they tout and then don't deliver on the promises. Very sad way to do business.
