I have a very expensive package that the USPS can't deliver, because customer won't respond

I've tried to contact the customer but he will not respond, USPS is going to return the item to me, it's ok I'll take it back no problem but it cost a lot to ship because it's huge, will I have to eat the shipping cost?

When you get it back and do a refund, do not refund the shipping cost. Or at least that's what I would do.

Does it have to be signed for?  Not sure why they don't just leave it.   If a buyer refuses delivery, they do lose buyer protection. You then would not have to refund the shipping.  If it's lost in the return you would not have to refund anything at least as the MBG is worded.  That gets dicey as they could file a charge back.

Do not contact the buyer again. eBay considers Out for delivery to be successfully Delivered.

 

If the buyer files @superbikez an Item Not Received refund request

1. upload your tracking number

2. then go silent.

eBay will close the case without a refund, and feedback will be blocked or automatically removed if already left. Only after that, it's up to you how much to refund, if any.

 

Evidence of successful delivery
We require all of the following to prove a successful on-time delivery:

  • A delivery status of "delivered" or "attempted delivery" (or equivalent in the country to which the item was delivered);
  • The date of delivery or attempted delivery;
