So two weeks ago, I sold a stamp. It was a $2 item. A little over a week ago it showed delivered, buyer said he didn't get it.
I realize that I'm off the hook with a delivery scan (it was ESE, so not like I could contact USPS to track it down), but my gut feeling was that the buyer was being truthful and no one is going to lie about not receiving a $2 stamp. (Not with his feedback and tenure around here).
So on Saturday I refunded as we agreed I'd do if it didn't turn up. My parting words were "it was probably misdelivered, hopefully you'll still get it", and he said "this happened once before and the seller said tough luck, thanks for the refund, but I'd rather have the stamp."
Last night I get an ebay message from him that read something like "guess what, my neighbour had it, they just brought it over, we need to cancel that refund so you get your money back."
I replied the refund is done, can't be cancelled once I initiate it, but if you really want to make it up to me, buy another stamp. (A second sale of a $2 stamp will put me on the plus for the cost of both items and shipping). I didn't hear from him, figured that's the end...
...and today as I was finishing work for the day I get a sale notification for 19.99 on a collection of Casino playing cards (17 decks, so about $1 a deck). The Casino cards were a gift from a hoarder who got them in Vegas and other places. My roommate and I play cards and we used some of them, but we had way more than we could possibly use in our lifetime, so I put together a batch and listed them.
My buyer with the INR on the stamp purchased my Casino cards, which didn't really have much value to me, but now I have $19.99 and space in my closet for more stuff.
It was a nice end to today.

Just goes to show there are still a few people out there that want to do the right thing.

My philosophy is just because I'm not legally liable, doesn't mean I'm not morally liable to do something. eBay has my back on the INR, but my gut feeling was that no one would lie about a $2 stamp with tracking showing as delivered. Sounded to me (in the end) like he has issues with his mail delivery. I messaged him tonight and assured him his playing cards would go out by Priority and we can track it down if something happens. (I mentioned the GPS on delivery scans, but I had explained previously the "delivery scan" he saw on eBay was an eBay thing, not USPS tracking, so there's nothing I can do to locate it, I can only refund him).
I wouldn't have held him to buying something from me, but repeat customers are more important to me than the return of funds on an INR mistake.

I find that the vast majority of people do the right.

I agree. The bad ones take up so much energy and make so much noise that it SEEMS like they're more, but they are not. Even Jonathan Swift said that one obnoxious person takes up the space of five normal people, and I'd say he was about right.

A good end result for you and has happened to me a few times. I get reply two days after I send their refunds 'hey this now arrived'. How do I pay you back? Happened more than once with different new buyers. I say the same thing please buy another item I can't reverse a refund. They always do buy the next item and they learned the lesson things take time to get delivered. So geuss what they bought a higher priced item the second time. They were happy to wait longer and came back a third time or more times again to buy my items. This is a win win result. So I don't worry when I hear this hasn't arrived. I know its just running late and I know in the end their going to be happy.
