@eleanor-joanraise your prices or

sell on Posh____ instead and pay a flat rate of 20% on all sales

I read that but it doesn’t mean it’s right or that I agree. My item was deliver 2 days later and tracking info was provided and so the acct reflects that the item was delivered still my funds are being held until 11-09. eBay explained they do this for high priced items, however, that’s who usually gets scammed, the sellers of high priced items. I won’t be using the platform anymore because it’s too much fine print for my liking. You get paid quicker off a car sale on Carvana…geesh

You did agree.  You agreed to the User Agreement when you opened your account.  Ebay does not have to ask for our permission, it is their site.

This policy is a good one and does help to keep the site safe for both buyers and sellers.  There was a time when some seller would come here, make some money selling stuff, never ship the items, then just in the nick of time take their money and run.  Never to be heard from again.  It was problematic.  This rule helps to prevent that.

The current fee on most categories is 13.25% with a 30 cent fixed fee on each payment submitted, no matter the $$ value.

Since 2011 the prices of many things have gone up much higher than what Ebay has raised its fees.  Heck just last year we had a huge inflation rate.  Ebay has bills to pay and a staff to pay for.  I don't know how anyone can reasonably expect Ebay to charge the same amount as they did in 2011 as they do in 2023.  I'm confident their employees would not agree to being paid 2011 rates as well.

You have approximately 86.75% left in which you pay for the product, shipping, shipping supplies and other business expenses.  If that still is not enough room for you to make a decent profit, about the only thing you can really look at to lower your costs significantly is what you are paying for your inventory or move to a different type of something to sell that allows for a better margin.

If your margins are too tight, don't do free shipping, do stated shipping and that may help a little bit.

I wish you nothing but the best.

"They" would be whom?  You are of the opinion that Ebay has the highest fees compared to similar sites??  Do your research.  Ebay is not the cheapest nor are they the highest.  If paying lower fees is your goal, you can find a site to accommodate you.  However you will likely have less sales as not all sites are equal in many ways to include traffic.

But if your concern is to lower your fees, it is within your power to do so

@eleanor-joan

Do you still pay PayPal 2.9% ?

You may want to also include that figure when comparing 😋

Great point.

@eleanor-joan

Before we were all transferred into Managed Payments, we paid Paypal 2.9% money processing fees and a 30 cent per transaction fee.  Then we paid Ebay [in most categories] 10.2%.  So that totals 13.10%.

Ebay started onboarding sellers into MP in August of 2020 and completed it by December 2021.  Once in MP, it was one fee of 13.25% for most categories and a 30 cent per payment fee.

That is only a 0.15% difference.

Re: High fees

Profit in selling at retail is payment for deciding which items you can sell and make a profit on after paying all costs.

If you cannot figure out how to make a profit, you should not be selling anything.

There are far too many Ebay sellers who list items without knowing whether or it they will make a profit when it sells.

There are far too many Ebay sellers who when they have chosen to sell items which will not sell at their price, choose to promote their products and give up any chance of making a profit, or lower their price, offer free shipping or a coupon which has the same effect.

There are too many sellers, they do not all buy the same item for the same price, and cannot all survive.

Some will not survive, and those who do may be able to make a bigger profit.

Re: High fees

In 2011  the eBay FVFs were 10% plus the PayPal Fees were 2.9%+ 30 cents.  Additionally you paid for each listing and every pic over one and no monthly allotment of free listings .  Yeah there was a random limited time "free" listing promo for 5 days to a week.  Me thinks the eBay selling fees are near the same except they are all wrapped up into one.

Know shipping cost have  skyrocketed since then.

Great point.

I think the Ebay FVF was 9% back then and we had 50 free listings per month for non store owners.

Re: High fees

That is only a 0.15% difference.

Paypal raised its fees not long after eBay and PP parted company.

It's still 2.9% + 30c* per transaction for us Canadians, but I have seen 3.5%+30c  mentioned by US sellers.

I can't access that site from here in Canada, sorry.

*30c Cdn is 22.5c USD

I'm aware they did that, but it did not affect Ebay sellers as at that time we could not use them as our money processor.

It is my understanding that the per transaction fee went to 49 cents and the percentage is somewhere around 3.5%.  I haven't checked their site recently on what they fees currently are since they don't affect me at all and haven't for a few years now.
