When did Ebay start letting non registered guests make purchases? This sure is not safe for sellers.

Most sites do. Ebay has had guest checkout as long as I can remember. 12 years at least.

Why is it not safe?

It used to be if you paid as a guest you had to join PayPal to get a refund. ID if that still applies since managed payments took over.

It's not actually a problem for sellers, but if the transaction goes pear-shaped, the guest buyer has great difficulty in using the Money Back Guarantee.

We get them all the time. Have had zero issues with the Zero FB buyers who are considered registered the same day as the transaction. They are just here to buy and mosey along. Like them a lot.

Same here. Never had an issue with a guest account purchase. I also notice the auto-generated username that uses some letters from the buyer's name.

Guest buyers, new buyers, and old buyers are all anonymous until they purchase an item. Unless they are a repeat buyer, a seller cannot distinguish a scammer from a legit buyer, not until the fraudster reveals himself thru some specific action. So my point is that a non-registered guest shopper is no more likely to be a risk than any other buyer.

It started as "eBay for guests" about a dozen years ago? I have guest buyers on Poshmark, too - it's just to purchase without signing up for an account. You don't get as many privileges as an unregistered guest buyer,. Other companies have similar - I was an unregistered buyer on Chewy until I realised that I would have to get vet meds there, too, so signed up for a regular account. You still have to pay for your goods.

Thank you all for your posts. My issue was that I received a notice from Ebay stating that they had cancelled a payment on an item that I had already shipped from a non member. I just don't want to be out the money and the item too.

How is a canceled payment from a guest user different than a canceled payment from a registered user? Why do you consider the latter to be "more safe"?

I heard ebay will be switching to this new fangled electronic payment system called "paypal". Will this be safe for sellers?
