Good ‘Til Cancelled Update from Harry Temkin, VP of Seller Experience

Hi everyone, there is an important update from Harry Temkin, VP of Seller Experience at eBay regarding Good ‘Til Cancelled.

Here’s the link to the post: https://community.ebay.com/t5/2019-Early-Seller-Update/Update-on-Good-Til-Cancelled/m-p/29556571#M18...

Here’s the update:

Hey eBay sellers, this is Harry, VP of Seller Experience at eBay. As you read in the 2019 Early Seller Update, we are moving all Fixed Price listings to Good ‘Til Cancelled (GTC). As a reminder, this change does not apply to auctions. We’re making this change because we have seen that GTC listings offer more sales opportunities than any other fixed price duration. Over time, GTC listings keep and grow watchers, sales history, and SEO authority as they maintain the same item ID and URL for the life of the listing. We believe all of the above improves the ability for buyers to discover items on eBay, which thereby improves the likelihood of a sale.

We’re aware of concerns some of you may have around managing GTC listings. Today in the Seller Hub Active listings page, you can see the start date of each of your listings. You can also sort by the start date to see, for example, your oldest listing at the top. With the start date, you can determine how long a listing has been active – but, currently, this requires you to do some math. By the end of March, we’ll do the math for you and will show you the number of days each listing has been active. Today, sellers can also sort active listings by end date or time left. For GTC listings, end date indicates the next date of renewal, and time left indicates the time left until renewal. Just as you do today, you can start, end, or relist your items at any time you choose.

All sellers may also take advantage of the out-of-stock feature, which allows you to effectively pause the availability of the item to buyers by setting the listing quantity to zero. This comes in handy if you want to keep all the benefits mentioned above (same item ID and URL, watchers, sales history and SEO benefits) while either your item is out-of-stock or you need a vacation. When you are ready to sell the item again, simply update the quantity back to a positive number. You can also use our bulk editing tools to update multiple listings at once.

We’re also aware of concerns about the 30 day auto-renewal period not syncing with monthly billing cycles. We’re looking into this. Thank you for your patience.

We always want to create the best experience we possibly can for our sellers. That’s why your feedback is so important to us. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you to improve your sales velocity and build a better marketplace.

Good ‘Til Cancelled Update from Harry Temkin, VP of Seller Experience

A quick update. As you are aware, starting March 18th the Good ‘till Cancelled (GTC) format is now the only duration available for fixed price listings.   If you have shorter duration listings that were listed before March 18th, they will end as scheduled and then when you relist you will see GTC as the only option.

Harry Temkin, VP Seller Experience and his team thank you for all of your feedback, especially on the 30 day renewal for GTC. The 30 day auto-renewal period was one of the main concerns raised by sellers due to it not syncing with monthly billing cycles. We are addressing this issue and will announce details by May.

All,

Our goal is to introduce the capability to show you the number of days each listing has been active in Seller Hub in April. Until then, you can continue to use the current sort filter in Seller Hub to calculate when an item was listed. We apologize for this short delay in introducing this new functionality.

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to advise that the Seller Hub column 'Start date' is live and ready for enablement.

Here is how to enable the new column in Seller Hub.

Step 1: Click ‘Customize’

Step 2: Select ‘Start date’ and ‘End date’, change your column order if desired, then click ‘Save’. (Note: You can also remove any columns that are not useful to you.)

Now your active listings page shows the ‘Start date’ (and elapsed time) and ‘End date’ (auto-renewal date for GTC listings) for each of your listings.

You can also adjust the width of the columns by hovering your mouse over any of the vertical dividing lines, then clicking and dragging.

Thanks all!

Good ‘Til Cancelled Update from Harry Temkin, VP of Seller Experience

Sellers,

We continuously strive to create the best possible experience for you, taking into account the critical feedback we receive from our community. As you saw in today’s Seller Update, we’ve made several improvements that are meant to help drive your business. These include introducing enhancements to growth and marketing tools, giving buyers more ways to pay, and making it easier to relist returns. In addition, we’ve taken steps to bolster seller protections, and we’ll continue to make further improvements in this area this year.

We’ve also announced that we will move to calendar-month renewals for Good ‘Til Cancelled (GTC) listings. This is a very important change, and one that originated largely in part due to your direct feedback.

Before jumping into the details of calendar-month renewals, I’d like to remind you of the rationale for making all fixed price listings GTC. Our intent in making this change is to drive sales conversion and to ensure that the best, most relevant listings appear in search, regardless of when or how they were created. As mentioned last month, we’ve seen that GTC listings realize tremendous SEO benefits that help to grow and keep interested buyers, thereby improving the likelihood of a sale.

The shift to GTC was not done to make listing management more difficult or to collect more money in the form of renewal fees.  However, we have seen sellers express concern about managing GTC listings and how their renewal dates align with monthly entitlements and promotions. With the current 30-day schedule, listings can shift from renewing at the beginning of the month, to renewing at the end of the month, or they can even renew on both the 1st and 31st of certain months.

By moving to a calendar-month schedule, your listings will renew only once in July, once in August, and once per calendar month thereafter. If a listing is created at the beginning of the month, it will always renew at the beginning of the month. If a listing is created at the end of the month, it will always renew at the end of the month. Listings, on average, will end up with more than 30 days per renewal cycle.  Listings will now go through fewer renewals per year, equating to less renewal fees paid by sellers. In all, this should make it easier for you to know when your listings will renew next, make it easier to manage your inventory by aligning with monthly billing cycles and promotions, and ultimately reduce the number of fees you pay to eBay.

A few additional callouts:

  • Duration is an important factor in helping sales conversion. Conversion can often take more than 30 days, and GTC listings provide oftentimes needed exposure in the marketplace. Putting aside seasonal items that you may choose to list for a fixed period of time, you should want your other listings to stay active to maintain SEO and “watchers” in the marketplace.

  • The “Start Date” column in conjunction with the “Time Left” column will allow you to easily rank listings that are scheduled to renew, or listings that have been in the marketplace the longest, to more easily help with managing your inventory.

  • You can pause a GTC listing by using the Out-of-Stock feature and setting the listing quantity to zero.  Any listing that is out-of-stock for more than a calendar month will be eligible for an insertion fee credit. Any listing that is out-of-stock for 90 consecutive days will automatically cease to renew.

  • Best Offer, Seller Initiated Offers, and Promoted Listings are powerful tools that when used in conjunction with GTC fixed priced listings help drive conversion. We have added the ability to filter active listings that have Best Offer enabled or are Promoted and easily bulk edit them. You can now also send bulk Seller Initiated Offers on multiple listings to multiple buyers at once.

Please refer to the GTC Update FAQ should you need any additional information. I hope this update has helped to clarify concerns or questions about the transition to Good ‘Til Cancelled fixed price listings.

Thank you for your continued partnership and feedback.

Harry
