I sold something for $12, and had to pay $8 for a shipping label? Now it says I only got $1.40 from the sale and the available funds are in the negative. Im very confused and don't understand what went wrong. Can someone help me?

You must have sold the item on a different account than the one with which you're posting, so it's a little more difficult to help you out without seeing the sold listing.
Did you offer free shipping? So the buyer paid you $12 with maybe some sales tax thrown in. We'll add another $1 onto that for sales tax. That's a total sale of $13. eBay's Final Value Fees (FVF) are probably 12.9% (again, we don't know what category your item was in, because we can see the sold listing) + $ .30.
$13 x 12.9% = $1.68 + $ .30 = $1.98 FVF
$13 - $1 sales tax (which gets taken out and sent to the buyer's state) = $12
$12 - $8 you paid for shipping = $4
$4 - $1.98 FVF = $2.02
So, without knowing the exact details of your transaction, I got pretty close. Does that help any?

What did you charge the customer for shipping?

As said, need more info. Item price was $12. Free shipping? What was the box size, how did you send it, etc?

Please post the item number of the item you sold. We can give more relevant and accurate information without having to speculate on what happened.

If you offered free shipping on whatever it was you sold, is not FREE, it just means you pay it instead of the buyer.

Mikey - EBay lesson #1. Never offer free shipping, unless all competitors do it, and even then, be very cautious. It’s only money, until it costs an arm and a leg.

Others have commented on the free shipping. The reason your available funds are in the negative is since this is your first sale you probably had $0 in the bank account linked to your eBay ID. EBay will hold your actual payout to your bank for xx days depending on several factors. If you purchased the shipping label through eBay and did not elect to have the funds taken out of the pending funds then eBay would have attempted to take that from your bank account which must not have had enough funds available to cover it.
As others noted this account has neither any current listings connected to it nor does it show any items as being sold so it is difficult to provide better suggestions.

To avoid next unpleasant sales with negative impact against your sales ability of item(s) you want to sell on Ebay, do the following:
a) input correct item volumetrics ( XYZ + item weight ) in your that Ebay listing.
b) set your that postal ZIP code of item shipped out from.
c) set Ebay shipping ( if available in outbound area ) for your that Ebay listing.
d) set DHL eCommerce ( if available in outbout area ) as second shipping for your that Ebay listing.
e) set Payment required upon Checkout.
f) Print Ebay paperwork ( Ebay Seller Dashboard or Ebay Seller Hub ) related to that sold item(s) and stick them over surface of shipment(s) and include them also inside that/those shipments.
g) In outbound shipping paperwork(s) include Ebay buyer telephone and Ebay email address.

Yes, do all these things and you should be good to go!

Why is it always a guessing game and people making assumptions? If they were really interested in getting help, they would give you something to work with. At best they could respond when asked a question for more info. But so many offer advice without knowing any facts. One big guessing game. The lightning is so loud and the thunder so bright. Blinded by the thunder and deafened by the lightning. Going in circles in a square room.

How about coming back and giving ALL the details, including at least the item #.
Unless you offered free shipping, your buyer was supposed to pay you the cost of shipping.
We would like to help, but it's hard without having all the facts.

My rule of thumb for free shipping. If I list something that I expect to sell for more than $100, then I pay for shipping, otherwise the buyer pays.

Nothing went wrong. You got good value for the lesson you paid for.
