Final Value Fees calculations ?

I just sold an item for $400 and I offer free shipping.  When I look at what was taken out for final value  fees I see this.

"Final Value Fee

Applies to Total Amount of the Sale #######Final amount: $441.00."
(### conceals the name of the buyer)

Why are the final value fees being calculated from $41 over what I actually sold it for?
All my auctions from this month calculate the final value fees from an amount that is more than what I actually received /sold an item for.

I know they offer a service and do so at a fee, but I don't understand why they aren't more precise in their calculations.

Whats gong on with this?

Final Value Fees calculations ?

@fishheadbigbrakes  - eBay started including the sales tax in the Final Value Fee calculation as of September 1st, 2020.  Fees are now calculated on the total amount of the sale including shipping, sales tax, etc.

Final Value Fees calculations ?

If you are in managed payments they charge final value fees on the total payment from the buyer including sales tax.

Final Value Fees calculations ?

At first I would question if there was a tax the buyer had to pay but 41 dollars in tax sounds high. What does the order details show for the total the buyer paid. You may want to have ebay call you to look at this FVF if you were over charged.

Final Value Fees calculations ?

@3eyedfishcatcher  - that works out to 10.25%.  Some states have a state tax rate and then the county and/or city/municipality also adds in a bit as well. That rate wouldn't be out of the question for some locations.

Final Value Fees calculations ?

Not being given the actual total the buyer paid I was mainly being nice a pointing him to the order details page to see what the total the buyer paid was. If 400 was the price in the listing the 41 is obviously from tax as this had free shipping. I also was not too serious about him contacting eBay as the order details will probably show right away why the FVF was taken out of 441 instead of 400. It is doubtful that this is a error I was just being nice when pointing out the obvious.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, the total of  $441 that the FVF were taken out of was including the sales tax.

Thanks for the clarification.
