Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

This is actually what I was writing e-bay about when I noticed I chose Forum by accident. So, I went ahead and posted it to see if you guys can explain this to me. If you don't mind. 😕

Hi, I recently started selling items on E-bay and I noticed that you are collecting a Final Value Fee that includes the shipping cost. How can you include the shipping cost? What does the shipping have to do with the cost of the item being sold which is usually half that? And not that it matters any but I don't even buy my labels or anything from e-bay. And It never even ends up being the same shipping price once I get down to the Post Office as what they paid. So I always end up giving them a 4-dollar or so shipping refund, sometimes more. This doesn't make sense to me at all. The last thing I sold was a $10 dollar toy that e-bay then took $3.87 of it. But if I up the price I would never be able to sell it because as it is the shipping on things is way too much! Can you explain this, please?

"Hand puppets? There Beanie babies? Hmmm, the shipping is all over and I am not quite sure. I thought I am doing the same thing for the stuffed animals but I will be checking this out to see what's going on. It's not the stuffies that I have been selling recently but the toys. And it's been ridiculous but around the same prices. thx"

Sorry then. beanie babies. But whatever they are, it wouldnt cost $11.65 for first class shipping. Have you weighed them to make sure they can go first class?

As was mentioned, you are much better off printing your labels on Ebay for the discount. And as I mentioned, pack your items, weigh the box or whatever, and go to USPS site and get an accurate shipping fee before you list the item.Cant those type of items go in a padded envelope wrapped in bubble wrap ?

its only that you want your shipping fees to be competitive with other sellers, especailly those who offer free shipping. Good luck.

Re: Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

When you look at the price of shipping in your listings, that's the fee that would be charged if the item is shipped to YOUR zip code. If someone in New York looks at your listing, he sees the shipping fee that will be charged to his zip code in New York.

"I'm not sure where you guys are seeing these prices? You're the second person to see something I am not seeing. All the Bears are $9 and some change in shipping? Can you tell me what you are looking at?"

As previously mentioned, I am in (very) southern California.  Each of your three beanie babies, for July, March, and May, shows a postage charge to me as $10.20.

Now, if my cousin in Iowa was looking at them, she would see a different postage charge.  And my friends in (very) southern Texas would see a completely different postage charge.

It's all computerized magic . . . . . . . . . . .

As others have said, the postage charge varies depending where you live........I'm in PA

Re: Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

Selling beanie babies is a tough category with the oversaturation on Ebay.340,000 listings.

Holy Moly, 340,000 Beanie Babys? I thought that trend was over a decade ago. Do they ever sell?

Seems to depend on the price..practically giving them away..

Re: Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

It is standard practice in the financial industry to charge feed on the entire transaction.

If you sell an item for $10, and charge your customer$10 for shipping, and the buyer's state charges 5% of the selling price as sales tax, the fees will be charged on the $20.50 cents PLUS a 30c non-refundable service charge.

If your category charges 12.9% FVF, that means a $2.64 cost for selling on eBay.

This is one of the reasons old hand sellers say "You make your money when you buy, not when you sell."

If you paid $1 for the item, paid $9.50 for shipping, and took five minutes (at $15 an hour minimum wage or 25c a minute) to photograph, describe and list your item,  your total costs were $17.89 on the customer's payment of $20.50 and you profit is $ 2.61.

Roughly a little over 2% of the sale.

You can look for cheaper goods.

You can look for goods that can be sold for more.

You can find cheaper shipping services.

You can learn to list faster.

Selling online is hard.

Re: Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

Well, when I went back to look at the shipping on my items it isn't actually all over so I am not sure what you mean. I actually thought they were too and two of you brought up shipping costs that I don't see. I can't find them on any of my items. This is weird. All the shipping on the bears is 9 something. Give or take a quarter. But I did change it though and made it the same for all of them. Well, almost all of them. I am working on it now. I put it at 7 just to be safe. If it's less than that I will refund them their change. I haven't actually sold one of them yet so I have no idea how much they will cost.

I don't understand what you mean with the Amazon thing. Your kind of talking another language to me because it's all new to me. I like the language you speak I just don't understand it.

Re: Final Value Fee includes shipping cost, Why?

Yes, I was talking about the USPS and not E-bay. I am not complaining about e-bay shipping at all. They're supposed to give it to us cheaper, correct? So no complaints there. No, I was talking about shipping costs in general at the Post Office. The people who made the cost this way are the ones I am upset with. And I know what you mean about back in the day they had paper routes and such. My brother was only 12 I believe when he started his. And it lasted for years. And my first son was around 11. Although, he was a little lazy for it. No, my son that is doing this with me now is older now sure and would understand the concept for the most part but he is on the spectrum. So, some of it is hard for him. I tried talking him into making his Grossery gang toys and Minecraft toys a bit more but he wanted exactly $10 dollars for each of them. It's my fault though. I told him there are fees but I didn't get into it with him at all when I should have explained it to him. And it was partly because I thought the fee would be maybe like a dollar and I would just give it to him myself. I have put the price up a couple of dollars since on those items without telling him. So, it looks like we're going to have a big talk about selling things on e-bay. Another little dream of his bites the dust! Figures.

Oh, and he wants to sell ALL his toys. I don't have the money to give him for all that, are you kidding? I am trying to sell stuff on Etsy as it is just to survive.
