Losing almost 20% in fees is kind of rough. Lost $21 on a $120 sale to fees. Is there any way to knock this down? Or start selling elsewhere? got any ideas?

in most categories your fee would have been around 17.00 on a 120.00 total sale. If you are using the optional promoting, that would account for the 4 additional dollars.

no, 20%  of selling price going to fees is normal, if the item is not promoted the main driver of fees a is what % of selling price is the shipping cost.

Sell a $25 item with $5 buyer paid  shipping and total effective fees are about  17.5%

sell a $25 item with $25 buyer paid shipping and total effective fees are about 28%

Thank you for making the comparison to 'effective fee' percentages.  It is something that is often overlooked as newer sellers come to complain of high fees.

While it's easy to state the official fee at ~14% (roughly, some variety there given what is being sold), no one likes that the fees apply to shipping and even sales tax, which has nothing to do with the price of the item.

Both of these drive the effective fee, or 'what it feels like', much higher.

As a seller of lower priced indivual items, I can very much feel the pain of effective fees.

In this order, my fee is ~14% as 'expected' ($1.95 on 13.60) but it FEELS like ~25% ($1.95 on $7.84).

In otherwords, eBay used Common Core math, and the rest of use use Real World math. 🙂 🙂

Bring it on down to Howdy Hank's Storage Rodeo and Bi-Weekly Flea Market on the Will Rogers Horse-a-roo Trail, 3 miles past the Dollar General in Muskaloosa Oklahoma. "Where you always get top dollar because Howdy Hank has fists of fury for a low-baller"

No, there is no way to knock down or change the fee structure in any way.  I always assume a 20% total fee when sourcing items in the field as a quick assessment.  It just is what it is.  Just be thankful you are not selling books which have a higher than average fee levied on them.

It gets knocked down if you get a basic (or higher) store subscription, but that's not worth it if you don't have enough sales.

Fees

1. The fee schedule is openly published for sellers to read before they sell.

2. The final value fee is charged on the total amount paid the seller by the buyer which includes the shipping cost as well as the state sales tax, if any.

3. Some sellers promote at a high percentage and then forget or didn't know that they would be charged for that.

4. But an experienced seller such as yourself knows all those things, right?
