Fake bid gauging

Good Morning all,

So recently in the past few months I have noticed buyers bidding on my sports cards not paying ,and placing ridiculous bids on the cards making other buyers not willing to place bids of there own.

I also noticed the bidders are creating fake accounts which usually are made the same day or the day before with 0 feedback or they are working with other fake accounts and just throwing bids out there to discourage others from bidding , I have reported this to ebay since November , but have gone an extra mile and noticed that the fake accounts seem all to be working togehter ! This morning I had a card on auction and it jumped from $13 to $202 in seconds and the top bidder just created that account today and the second bidder had a similiar user id with the same kind of name . You can tell its one person price gauging the card! This is a user with 2 separate accounts trying to make it look good for themsleves but they arent to bright ,I looked into it deeper and saw the second highest bidder only had 20 feedbacks his last 2 were negatives and it seems that the second bidder has worked with another ebayer and it looks as if they are trying to gauge the market . Seems like there are 4 particular users that I see in the same feedbacks , One thing I saw on another card on my auction is this user has 2 feedbacks and when I looked into the 2 sales of positive feedback they are no where to be found , that user on the second card just created an account 2 days ago , how does that user get 2 positive feedbacks in just 2 days with no trace of any sale, now I think it is more problematic because the actual user giving that feedback has an account for years selling sports cards etc etc and it looks as if the problem stems from him / her and that user is creating multiple fake accounts to screw the card market up !!  Again it was reported to ebay this morning but it is becoming a real frustration of just pure **bleep** lately . Sport card sellers trying to gauge the card pricing using fake account to make fake bids , pushing others from making honest bids and so on, Is there any advice out there that can be shared? I know I have blocked several user id's already and changed the buyer requirements in my ebay and ebay said they reported all the different user id's and will see if there all connected and if so ebay will suspend all the accounts for fraudulent activity. So ebay suspends accounts and then the users use a different form of ID or payment information and the cycle continues .. Very annoying indeed but any help or ides would be helpful ! Sincerely Very frustrated ebay seller !!!

Re: Fake bid gauging

There is no way on eBay of "setting up your account so that people with low feedback can't bid".

Try it with "gouging" and see if it makes more sense.

No, because "gouging" is also a seller activity, and the OP is the seller, and he's complaining about what some buyers do.

His actual complaint seems to be about "sport bidders".

No, you don’t. No one does. As the person you’re disagreeing with explained, you can prevent low feedback buyers from buying/bidding on MORE THAN ONE: you can’t stop them from buying/bidding on the first one.

You only think you are doing it, what you are in effect doing is negating  all of your blocks above the indented block so your rules/blocks will only apply to those buyers with 5 FB or less.Capture.JPG

Read carefully what that box actually states

Re: Fake bid gauging

So I looked at your listings and have been involved on here with sportscards for over 20 years.

That being said I can tell you EXACTLY what is happening. You have current product up that is brand new and high end (with those Bowman Chrome Autos.)  Everyone, like they always do, is trying to squeeze as much as they can before a product slows down like it always does.

Looking at just the first page of your auctions I bet you bottom dollar it's from someone one (or a group of someones because that exists too) shill bidding yours sky high so that by comparison, it will make theirs not only sell for more but make the actual buyer of that card think they got a deal.

This is how PWCC got banned from eBay. Report literally each and every account. You're totally being messed with.

Re: Fake bid gauging

If auctions (which are only about 15% of listings on eBay in any case) are giving you so much trouble, why not switch to Fixed Price listings?

By now you should have a pretty good idea of where the sweet spot is on pricing.  And while you may miss the very occasional bidding war, you will have three time longer to find a customer (30 days instead of seven), won't have deadbeats and by adding Immediate Payment Required, you can lose the thrill bidders, since the listing stays up until it is paid for.

Those sellers need to be banned from ebay

No? Was just trying to explain the word "gauging" as used by the OP when he obviously meant "gouging".

Yes, I understand he probably meant "gouging", but what he's describing isn't gouging. So his use of "gauging" or "gouging" doesn't explain his problem. That's why I asked him to give us his definition of the term he was using.

What he means is shill bidding. Common in the sports card arena sadly. Most have switched to fixed price however. A large scale seller got banned from eBay for this recently.

Good lord. Shilling, as with price gouging, is something a SELLER does. The OP is a seller complaining about BIDDER activity. It’s either:

1) sport bidding

or

2) bid shielding

If the final bid amount is ridiculously high, it’s #1. If the price drop drastically near the end, it’s #2.
