Ebay won't let me sell here any more :(

I am an individual seller; a 73 year old man simply selling items I no longer want or need for extra cash.  Not a business.  I have been selling here for 15 years.  Like everyone else, I have received the warning that as of March 3rd, I will need to register with something called ebay managed payments or no longer be able to sell.  Well, March 3rd finally arrived.  Now I am blocked from selling.  So, I went to sign up as requested...

The first page of the sign-up required I give them my SSN.  I have never given that out to anyone other than required government entities, and have always been told to never give it out over the internet.  That would be just another server waiting to be hacked and have the SSN stolen.  And I don't know what other personal info they want of me after that, because I couldn't get past the first page.  So, am I finally going to have to part ways with ebay after all these years because I'm protecting my SSN?

Hi @clutchc, I highly recommend you contact Customer Service so you can speak with our managed payments team and have your concerns addressed. They will be able to go into more detail about account security, tax requirements, and any other details that may be relevant as to why a payment processor would need your social security number.

Re: Ebay won't let me sell here any more :(

Trinton, Thank you for jumping in with this message. But what is wrong with the payment method I am using now; Paypal. It's the payment method ebay required me to have 15 years ago, and they already have my SSN. In fact, it would not surprise me if ebay doesn't already have it too, because ebay owned paypal back then. I don't understand why I am not allowed to sell here anymore unless I jump thru some new hoops.
I'm already being charged my state sales tax for everything I buy here. You've got all the information necessary in your files now. What more private information could you possibly want? Tell us up front please.

Hi @clutchc, while our managed payments team will be able to address this in more detail, the simple answer is that managing our own payments will create a more consistent (and ultimately better experience) for both buyers and sellers. While the majority of eBay sellers have been using PayPal for quite some time and there are a large number of buyers who have utilized PayPal without an issue, there are a growing number of buyers who simply do not complete their purchases on eBay when they are required to create an account with a third party site (PayPal). Every other online retailer manages their own payments in the way that we are transitioning to, and there will be countless benefits for our Community from being able to accept more payment methods to improved protections in payment disputes. Re: Ebay won't let me sell here any more :(

Just curious, we all talk about how managed payments will affects us, the sellers, but how will it affect the buyers?  Will they still be able to pay with PayPal or just a credit card?  Can they register the card so they don't have to give new credit card information each time they purchase? Can anyone explain to me how it's going to be from the buyers POV?  I am dreading this change.

Buyers can pay with Paypal even if the seller is in Managed Payments.

Hi @inhawaii, great questions! Buyers are still be able to use PayPal and PayPal Credit as a payment method in addition to debit cards, credit cards, Apply Pay, and Google Pay. Buyers can save their payment information for future purchases if they would like, and the experience will match what buyers have come to expect as the industry standard.

We know that change can bring about frustration or concern, and we're here to help you navigate this transition. If you have enrolled in or been invited to managed payments, you are welcome to contact Customer Service to speak with our managed payments team directly. They will be happy to address any questions you may have, as well as take your feedback on this experience so far.

Call up IRS and see if you can use.get an EIN - to use instead of your SSN.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

Re: Ebay won't let me sell here any more :(

You will be charged tax by most venues you want to buy from as that is your state's law

https://blog.taxjar.com/marketplace-facilitator-explained/

Just as reporting your income is a federal law and required ebay and paypal have your ssn

Btw you may not consider yourself a business but you are acting as one by selling your items no matter where

This is a user to user board not eBay employees.

At this point in time it is still unclear as to whether or not Managed Payments "will create a more consistent (and ultimately better experience) for buyers......." eBay has yet to post any details that I can find regarding what their rates are for converting currencies and how they will calculate those rates for cross border transactions where the buyer is wanting to convert their local currency into the sellers accepted currency. i.e. I wish to make a purchase in the amount of £100 GBP (British Pound) from a seller on eBay UK using US Dollars.

Is it a set percentage over the current mid market rate? If so what is that percentage? This is where the rubber hits the road as to whether or not Managed Payments will equate to a better buying experience; at least where cross border transactions are concerned.

eBay's currency conversion calculation method needs to be front and center as well as being easily accessible to all buyers and sellers somewhere on the site. I have a real fear that eBay is going to want to conceal that rate calculation until the buyer gets to checkout where it is then and only then that they discover that eBay wants $140 USD to purchase a £100 GBP widget. And as a seller as well as being a buyer that is important information that I need to make a decision regarding whether or not eBay's Manage Payments are right for me.

I have a feeling it will be for me as well. Unless they have tiered payments by the time I'm forced into it, otherwise they are going to force me off eBay.

I hate photobucket right now... PS Answers given years ago may or may not be current now, please check with current posters to the boards to see if the information is still relevant.

How long does it take to get the funds for shipping? Right now it is instantly available in PayPal. Is it the same for managed payments - or not?
