Ebay Authentication is a Complete Scam

Anonymous

If you're a seller with Ebay, I advise you consider one of two things:

A. Remove 'Return Policies' from all products sold on your store page.

or

B. Leave Ebay.

I believe I've discovered a completely broken authentication system at Ebay, and the company has fundamentally failed in every capacity to fix it. Let me start from the beginning,

On April 27th of this year, I had placed a Pokemon card on sale for $400. I had put a return policy on it in good faith in case anything were to happen to the card. This was my ultimate mistake, and yet at the same time, an incredibly easy system to abuse. A buyer had purchased it for $370 and we had good communication between each other beforehand. After they got the card, I never heard from them again. Until June 3rd, where I was informed that the buyer wanted to refund the transaction fully due to the card not being what was advertised. Side note: I had shown this buyer numerous images prior to buying, and there was seemingly no issue upon seeing the pictures. Obviously upon hearing this request, I was taken by surprise. At no point within the last 29 days did I ever receive a message from this guy saying there were any issues with the card. I also couldn't dispute or counter the refund request since Ebay's return policy automatically goes to the favor of the buyer. Nothing made sense, and I was growing more frustrated by the day. That's when I started noticing odd things.

June 3rd was the day the buyer had requested the refund. When June 4th rolled around, I checked his store page ... and my card was there on his store page. Still up for sale for $475. I immediately found that odd. Why would it still be here despite him demanding this refund? He didn't bring it down until I informed him about it. Him suddenly claiming that it "it didn't sell in time".

I had called Ebay regarding this situation, and every time I called, it was the same story, "You shouldn't have put a return policy on the product.". If you're telling me I shouldn't have put it there, then what's the point of the return policy in the first place? To abuse the little guy? That's the only other way I can see it. On top of that, the company that (I believe) Ebay uses to "authenticate" their cards has a rather infamous track record on the Better Business Bureau. See here for yourself:

https://www.bbb.org/us/fl/sarasota/profile/collectibles/certified-guaranty-company-llc-0653-48000334

1 Star, B- grade, not BBB accredited, and over a hundred complaints on file? This is the company Ebay is using to verify their cards? A company with a history of failing to communicate with their customers, actively being rude to their customers, extremely slow wait times for simple orders to be made, failure to properly grade certain products, and whole bunch more? This is how Ebay is handling authentication?

TL;DR: If you want to buy and resell something expensive, just make sure you buy the product from someone who has a return policy. That way if you aren't successful in selling the product, you can always just request a refund on the last day, and Ebay won't bat an eye.

Do yourselves a favor: if you have something worth a lot, do NOT sell through Ebay. Do NOT expect good will from them. As far as I can tell, they are a malpractice company who have no regard for anyone but themselves.

Ebay Authentication is a Complete Scam

"Life" is a scam. I checked my debit card transactions over the weekend and found I had purchased football(or whatever they call it there) tickets to a game in England. Never been there and don't plan to.

In your case, a quote from my attorney comes to mind, "It is what it is." And actually, from my many experiences, the BBB is a scam. So there's that. Good luck!

I sense your frustration...truthfully, but...

What did authentication have to do with this story...what does the return policy have to do with the buyer wanting to return it? Other than borderline abuse of the MBG, the buyer is within the timeframe for a return (i think)

on another note...I am not a CGC cheerleader, but they are the top recognized grading company for comics/magazines...not sure about trading cards.

CGC does 1,000's of comics/magazines...29 complaints (all satisfactorily dealt with) in a year is not very many....and most were related to their well-known backlog....bbb is a waste of space too

I see you are fairly new to selling on this platform. Actually, putting any return policy means nothing on your listings. eBay's return policy is the only one that matters and that is 30 days.  I am not sure if that is business or calendar days. "No return" policy doesn't mean anything and eBay will overrule it every time from my experience of selling here for over 23 years.  Pokemon cards, video games, electronics, etc are a magnet to be scammed.  Always take a return because at least you will not be out of the merchandise because eBay will follow the tracking back to you.

I would suggest learning the caveats of selling on eBay first. Read the posts of issues from other sellers here to become better educated on how eBay will run your business. It's the only way to succeed, and even at that, the road will get bumpy at times. Learn from your mistakes and always think as a business. I wouldn't give up as of yet, give it a try again and things may work out for you. It has been very profitable for my company for over 23 years here.  Just my thoughts and I wish you well whatever you should decide.

One other item - If you do plan on staying here for another try, create 3 BUSINESS POLICIES if you haven't already. eBay encourages this. A great way to do that is to see what other sellers have shown for their business policies.

You wrote:

The sale was April 27th

Just noting the purchase date....that exceeds the allowable 30-day window for a return?

Before purchasing, check the seller’s return policy. If the seller doesn’t accept returns, the sale is considered final. If the seller has a timeframe for returns, you must open the return within that window.

Ebay told me the 30 day return window begins the moment the card leaves their authentication building. Not when it leaves my home. They told me that the seller had requested the return within the 30 day window because of this fact. It didn't leave the Ebay authentication building until May 4th, so he was able to request a refund.

I think I'm better off selling products of value in-person rather than online. From this experience - and all I've seen - too much can happen. Plus, it would be better for someone who actually wants to buy it to see it person instead of online.

Ebay has too many caveats for me.

EBay's authenticity is definitely a scam, but obviously life is not or you would never have it.

They need to do away with this department! They screwed up every single sale that went to them. I call and they apologize and I still lose money. Recently I mailed BRAND NEW shoes to them and left letter saying to read the listing properly. The authenticator mailed them back and lied and said they were dirty and had rocks. Impossible! They were being petty from the note I left inside. To prove it, these have already been authenticated as new. When you call,  nothing is done! Ebay will not last as long as they keep hiring people that don't take their job seriously. It's a joke!!
