EBay turned on automatic return accept!

As we got in the office this morning we quickly noticed that eBay started auto accepting returns!

We did NOT turn on this feature and made sure it was off in the past.

We can make our own return labels, frankly I don't trust eBay to even give us a label with the proper price point. Nor do I trust them to cancel the label if the item is not shipped.

There doesn't seem to be any way on here to even see the shipping prices directly!

Ridiculous....

"Starting in August 2018, listings that you have not updated to one of the new returns policy options, including Good ‘Til Cancelled, will automatically be updated for you."

I wonder if they'll be auto updated to 60 day free returns?

As always, ebay announcements are vague.

Reality is the leading cause of stress.

I changed mine last month, looks like I still can.

Go to account>site preferences>return preferences>show>edit>action>edit brings you to a list with check boxes for automatic returns where you should be able to uncheck reasons...it's hard to find and kinda confusing.

It is still off for us!

They are auto accepting anyway!

Shipping labels page is empty. No records of the labels they sent. No record of the charges we will have! No opportunity for us to send our own labels at a good price, we are being forced to pay eBay's price, which is higher!

Our listings are the same return method as before. Just being automatically accepted!

Now we have to deal with this, ON TOP of the issues that began yesterday with stores being charged $0.35 for listings without best offer on??? (Which was never announced anywhere!)

Good Luck Selling!

They only said it will automatically update listings who are not using one of their new returns policy options, and these listings were using new return policy options.

So why, exactly, are they turning it on for our listings? Because it is a new polciy and if sellers fail to update there listing, they will help those sellers out by doing it for them

Furthermore, it says it will not exceed outbound label price if purchased on eBay, when we get better prices outside of eBay!

So basically, we not only must offer free returns now, but we must use eBay's labels for higher fees as well??? eBay can not see what you do offsite

Is it even possible to shut this off??? NO

Or any way to see what they are charging for these labels??? Already answered

Or any way to see if they are properly voiding the label when the customer does not return???

All of the answers to these questions are in the link I gave you.  Try to make some time and read through the FAQ.  Your last question about voiding a return shipping label

Sellers are not charged for the return shipping label until a tracking scan shows in the request details, so although eBay issues these labels, you are not charged until a scan happens.

I checked the returns page , we STILL have automatic returns set to OFF!

The only information I could find is it is telling us we must request to void a label within 5 days... what happens if the customer does not use the label within their alotted time then???

This is ridiculous!

This info would be in the return request details.  No reason for it to be any other place.  You are not charged for the return shipping label until the first scan shows in the return request details.

Regarding the first comment, our listings did not need to be updated. We did not use restocking fees at all. We are all 30 days free returns or 30 day returns (and it seems BOTH are being accepted automaticaly).

If eBay can not see what we are using for our labels, and our labels are using exclusive pricing, they should not be forcing us to use their labels with inferior pricing!

And there is still no way for us to see what labels are being sent, nor any way to see what they are charging.

As you said in the last post "will cost no more than the original outbound label if it was purchased on eBay." Well, it was NOT purchased on eBay. So what is going on now???

I would suggest spending some time reading the link I gave you.  You seem to have a lot of If's and's and but situations.  Selling online at eBay is a highly automated system so the policies are not customized to every sellers unique and or specific needs.  You will have to learn to work within the policies.

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

Just like when you list a new item if you do not want to include Global Shipping - the check mark stays there unless you delete it - you have to delete it twice. eBay is terrible with all the new IT changes. eBay does not care about their Sellers - the IT department is going to put eBay out of business with all these STUPID CHANGES that AFFECT the stores that LONG TIME SELLERS ARE PAYING FOR!!! Customer Service is a waste of time. We have to call at least once a week or more with issues that the only response is - must be a glitch, IT does not consider your store a priority at this time. AFTER SIX MONTHS - we first started calling in JANUARY, 2018 - it is now JULY, 2018!!!

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

This has been done for several weeks now.  I called MerchSupport as soon as I noticed (again, 'twas weeks ago) and was told that essentially this was the way it was going to be, period --- to "help" sellers make a better buying experience.  The only way we even get notifications is to 'force' a RMA (there's a box to check in your settings) though it doesn't always work, either.

Yeah, still a bunch of phooey.

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

Didn’t eBay announce this last fall? That if you accept returns, they would be automatically approved? The only way to avoid that was to use RMA numbers.

Sorry but in this case, I don't buy that excuse. It's not an outside/rare case. With the Guaranteed Delivery situation early this year, and their adaptation to the feedback, that they are aware the majority of serious sellers do NOT use eBay labels.

They are also aware that most top sellers have negotiated rates.

These scenarios are now being IGNORED while you are forced to use their label system, and they choose the shipping type??

One of our returns is for a very large truck cover. It is set to 30 day returns - buyer pays. It automatically sent them a label for "does not fit" when he says in his return detail he wants to return it for a shorter one it's too long, meanwhile the length is listed in the listing, even in the title. He directly states that he needs 69 inch, not 6.5 feet, in a 6.5 feet listing!

This item was sent with our FedEx negotiated rates on shipping, and is extremely expensive.

Why on earth should we be paying for this item, when it is NOT SNAD???

Why should we be paying increased shipping fees instead of our own negotiated rates??

What label did they even send????

These are not "if, and, or buts". These are typical return cases!

They gave us the option in fall. Now the option is being ignored and they are accepted period, and they are sending their own labels at seller expense.

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

If you need special exceptions to the automated rules I would suggest calling and talking to a returns specialist and explain all your what if questions.

We only have the info ebay publishes and that is what we are trying to help you with.  Most of your answers have already been answered although they may not be what you wanted to hear?

Since you have outside eBay contract rates you might be able to do what many of the electronics sellers do?

They include inside the package a return shipping label for every package.  The buyer can then use the label by which the seller is charged the return shipping fee at that time or the buyer can not use it and the seller will not be charged for the return shipping label.

You should be able set this up with your carrier as part of your contracted rates.  You might even get lowered return shipping rates.

@missjen831

Hi, Jen. I guess I am confused. On true remorse returns where buyer pays return ship, I always receive a notice from ebay buyer wants to return due to remorse, I accept, ebay gets them label, I get item back, I refund. I checked my preferences and I have never opted into the automatic anything. Help lolol.

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

@abfabvintage It’s not something the seller can opt in and out of, as far as I know.

Last fall, eBay announced this https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/seller-updates/2017-fall/returns.html

so im thinking that since the word says “may automatically accept”, that they didn’t roll this out sitewide for all sellers with a return policy? Or maybe just GTC listings were affected by it until now with the spring & summer 2018 changes?

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

It's still auto-approved, we simply get a heads-up and the opportunity to add a reference term.  But even then, it doesn't always work - we are notified maybe 50% of the time (which luckily is still not very often as returns have slowed down after the initial glut with the last update).

Re: EBay turned on automatic return accept!

They gave us the option in fall. Now the option is being ignored ...

We originally had the option of Best Offer - and now we don't, it's placed on our listings for us.

We originally had the option of "Guaranteed Delivery" - and now we don't, we're auto-opted in (though technically we can opt out.  Maybe.)

We originally had the option of refusing returns - and now we don't.

There are a LOT of things sellers have been able to do in the not-distant past in the course of their business - but eBay determined that each of those were not profitable enough for its self-identified ideal.
