“Research has shown that 3-month-old babies prefer faces from certain racial groups, 9-month-olds use race to categorize faces, and 3-year-old children in the United States associate some racial groups with negative traits,” the American Psychological Association said in an August statement. “By age 4, children in the U.S. associate whites with wealth and higher status, and race-based discrimination is already widespread when children start elementary school.”

During this pandemic, I've been doing a lot of reading about Black Americans and Native Americans--stories of slavery and the subsequent Jim Crow laws and the treatment of the Native American population throughout this country's history. Stories that would break a person's heart. Indignities no one should have to suffer.

If you still believe Little Black Sambo or so-called "pickaninny" salt and pepper shakers should be allowed to be listed on eBay, chances are you're white and "of a certain age." If you can't understand why these things might be hurtful to people of other races or ethnicities, ask your friends, neighbors, co-workers or colleagues who are people of color.

Times change. Cultural values and norms change. Time to change with them. As they say, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."
