Charity

I am so not liking the fact that EBay is automatically taking money out of proceeds for charity without my permission! This starts in Nov and I am taking my listing down because of it. It’s bad enough with all the other fees a seller has to pay, now this!! Not happy! 😞

@peggyannorr : Do you mean to say that eBay is taking their percentage out of the amount you designate for charity? More details, and a link to whatever you are referring to that starts in November, would be helpful here. Please click the Reply button below and tell us more.

I guess she didn't even want to be enrolled in the charity stuff. But she's talking about this:

Your donations through eBay for Charity will now be automatically deducted
Hi xxxxxxx,

We’re simplifying your experience when you donate a percentage of your listing proceeds to your favorite charity. Starting in November, we’re rolling out automated donations with eBay for Charity, and the best part? There’s nothing you need to do.

What you need to know
You’ll no longer be required to manually transfer your donations—we’ll automatically collect them from your total sale amount once your buyer pays for the item. We’ll begin rolling this process out in November, and by early 2024 this will be available to all US sellers. Your donation will reach your preferred charity faster—and with zero effort on your part. Donations through eBay for Charity are nonrefundable, so if a buyer requests a refund after your donation has been sent to the charity, you’re still required to refund the buyer the total amount.

We’ll be updating our community selling Terms and Conditions to reflect these changes, so don’t forget to check back soon for more details. Thank you for continuing to use eBay for Charity to support the charities you love.

Thanks for being part of the eBay community.

Re: Charity

It sounds like to me you signed up for this by clicking that charity box. Your post was incorrect and did you read the link I posted?

Re: Charity

Apparently EBay is going to start taking out a percentage for charity without our permission in Nov. I did not give them permission to do such! Their fees are bad enough as it is!

and we will no longer have to pay PayPal.

EBay is no longer connected with Paypal.

The companies parted ways back in 2015 and as a seller you would be paid, and billed, through Managed Payments.

Check the headers on that email.

Did it really come from eBay?

Sounds like a scam.

Was this a Message on your eBay page?

The charity stuff was still through PayPal. You'll get an invoice about now (just got mine today for instance) and pay the charitable part of last months sales through them.

I guess eBay is finally doing away with that.

Re: Charity

How do you opt out. Any idea?

Re: Charity

Sorry you are the one with the error, so instead of repeating this over and over, get it resolved with eBay.  No one is donating to a charity without their permission.

Re: Charity

Are you actually "opted in" ????

or did you just get the " notification" of how it will work for those using the "charity" option????

Re: Charity

"How do you opt out. Any idea?"

My selling ID has "opted out", as you call it.   No funds from any of her eBay sales will be sent by eBay to any charity.
And the process is/was very simple.

She has never ever on any listing now or at any time in the past --
n e v e r checked any box that says her listings will support any charity ever created in the history of the world.

If my selling ID wants to support an Elton John Charity or the American Red Cross or any fund for rebuilding Maui, she looks up that charity on the internet and either sends a check or donates online.

I looked at your listings, Peggy Ann, and I see only one.  There is no mention anywhere near that listing that says you choose to donate any money from the proceeds of that sale to any charity.   And believe me -- if you had checked any "charity donation" box while you created your listing, eBay would absolutely show that fact in your listing.

I think what has happened is that you did not read eBay's notice carefully.   This happens all too frequently, on issues ranging from charity donations to how fees are calculated to eBay's encouragement of sellers to purchase postage through eBay.

Re: Charity

I called and got it straightened out hopefully. They did not know why this was happening. That’s crazy! Hopefully come Nov they won’t be taking out for charity.

Thank you,

Peggy

I hope your customer service agent was  right. As charity funds are nonrefundable if ebay still pays it out of your account.

Re: Charity

I’d want to know why I got an invoice to pay if I’d never signed up.  Was that the first time you ever received one?  I’ve never gotten one before.

Re: Charity

What you should do is use the bulk edit on all of your listings. Click on "remove all donations from my listings".

That should clear up any that you may have accidentally signed up for.

If you were charged for donations that you never signed up for, you should contact ebay support and get it resolved.

Ebay will be automatically taking money out of proceeds for listings that have a charity attached to sales. That's actually a great thing for sellers. It will not affect you if you are not collecting for charity on your listings.

The one thing I question is whether charity sellers understand they will be on the hook, personally, for refunds.  Since ebay will immediately send the % to the charity.....If a buyer requests a cancellation.... the seller will have to come up with the amount sent to the charity out of his pocket to complete the refund.  Same, of course, for returns.

Re: Charity

Ebay does not take people funds and give them to charity without their permission.

If this is happening to you, it's a mistake and can easily be fixed by contacting ebay.

Make sure the "charity" switch on your listings s tuned OFF.

Good luck!

Re: Charity

I am sure that many of them will not be aware of that. Someone did address it another thread on here recently tho. That information should be included in the eBay policy for refunds/charitable contributions, I think. At least give people a heads up before they decide to add it to their listings. Not that they necessarily read the policies..... LOL
