COMIC BOOK eBay SELLERS

Hi. This is a vent post. I'm a comic book seller on eBay, looking for feedback from other comic sellers and eBay personnel.  No disrespect to other sellers, but this commodity is unique and not like other products.   I've loved comics since I was a child and selling comics was supposed to be fun.  I had two brick and mortar stores a long time ago, but I am not a Diamond Distributor retailer.  I get my supply from other retailers.  Mark up for me is not very high.  With that said, I am totally disgusted in selling this stuff on eBay.  Until a few hours ago, I haven't made a sale since May 28.  The whopping sale I just made was for $3.74 plus shipping.    Which is on par with the types of sales I do make.  Everything under $5.00.   Sell I most of my items with the Best Offer option and lately those offers come in at 75% or more of the asking price.  I 've had enough of it already.  I counter offer and it's just declined.   More than willing to sell things at a decent price, but it's at the point where I can't afford to buy something for $10.00 to just sell it for a $1.00.  The hopes are to sell it for $15.00 or $20.00, but all I get from eBay is "lower the price, and make the sale" "lower the price, and make the sale"!   I'm over this as well.  What should I do?  Lower it by 99%?  How about I list everything I have for a penny?  Oh, and let's not forget FREE SHIPPING!  Ship everything for free and make the sale!  I've been doing that since last December.  Once a month, usually around a holiday, I mark everything down 5% with free shipping-no matter what they buy.  No what sales I get?  I sell 1 comic book for $3.00 with free shipping at my cost of $2.75.  Figure in the eBay fees of about 30 cents. I'm 5 cents in the hole not figuring in the actual cost for this item.   For some reason, I rarely make a sale over $10.00.  This selling pattern is becoming non-sustainable.   I'm at wit's end.   I currently have 84 items on WATCH LIST.  the watch list is the death knell for my items, because they just sit there for months and years at a time never to sell!  Sure, I use the submit offers to buyer feature, that doesn't work for me.  Never make a sale!  Sometimes it comes off the watch list, I guess that person no longer felt anonymous anymore.  Sometimes I feel the watchers of these items are just my competitors seeing what I actual sell the item for or not.   I've got over 800 items listed for a value of just over $14, 000.  Not seeing why I cannot make a $1, 000/month in sales. Instead it's $200 - $300  a month if I'm lucky.  To me, there are no buyers out there, just dreamers and those who wish they could afford what I have.  How to get my listings in front of buyers who have disposable income?    What do I do?  Have a firesale and mark everything down by 99% and free shipping?  This way every purchase means I'm paying the buyer to buy this stuff from me?  Maybe just mark it all down 200% off?  The Red Black Hole already exists, maybe I can see how big I make that hole.....    I work a meaningless job to live by.  I hoped I could be successful at this to quit that or at best have some supplemental income.  Been a seller on here for 17 years and never made a profit to give my self.  Instead I work jobs to put money in my Pay Pal account so eBay Fees can be paid so I can continue to wage a losing battle. Never give up, Right?   What's the point?   I ought pile up every item I sell, dump it in my backyard, dump kerosene on it and light the match.  Will video tape it and put it on You Tube maybe then I can earn some money...…..Thanks for reading.  Vent is over.

Have you tried selling the books together in say lots of 6 to increase your average sale price and hold down your actual shipping costs?

Sorry to hear about your selling difficulties. I also sell comics on eBay. My situation is different. I'm retired, selling off my collection. My sales are in the dumps too. A saturated category may have something to do with it. There are over 4 million items in comics daily on eBay. I have seen a further drop in sales since GTC became active. eBay does not seem to care about sellers, large or small. Complaining to CS staff about these issues has become a waste of time as the answer is always some platitude about eBay changes being made to "help" sellers make more sales.

I wish I had something of help to offer. I hope things improve for you in the future.

If I have the complete story line or at least a complete mini-series or even issues 7-12 then yes.  I am re-evaluating trying to sell the individual books in groups of six.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not retired yet, wish I was, but I appreciate the information.  I guess in my little bubble didn't realize the amount of comics on eBay was that high.  Nice to know not alone out there.   All comic enthusiasts want their comics for nothing.  No wonder brick and mortar stores are going out of business.   New comics with retail prices of $3.99 and up is difficult.  Especially when your patrons all want the brand new issue for say $2.00.  It's the only business I know where patrons feel it's ok to haggle on new comics.   Try that at Wal-Mart.

I feel your pain and have no answer. I started selling comics back in `02 and made enough to branch off to selling other things and support my buying habit for my collections. I eventually quit selling comics and recently just started selling them again.

There is a ton more comic sellers now then there was then. Some of these are mega sellers with literal warehouses of inventory and workers that list, grade and pack daily. The ebay selling rules don`t seem to apply to them giving them more of an advantage over smaller sellers. IMO the rules should apply evenly to everyone though.

If I found it was costing me money to sell here I would try to make some changes. If those changes didn`t work I`d have to quit.

Traffic and sales are way down across the whole ebay platform right now, so I totally feel your pain, as I'm sure many others do as well. But you're making your situation much worse by selling things for no profit, and playing games with "Best Offer." Any time you put best offer on a listing, of course people are going to offer less, they think that's what you wanted them to do.

If your profits are as bad as you say they are, then why not raise your prices? While I can't speak for everyone else, I definitely don't work for free, and I never negotiate on my prices. I too sell comic books, along with video games, movies, etc, and I always factor in all costs when setting my prices, and buyers can forget making offers.

All the time I see other video game sellers selling games for next to nothing, and its obvious from their pricing they make no profit on anything. While my sales aren't great either, I make a good profit on everything I sell. One game I recently sold for $50 I paid $1 for!

What you could try doing is diversifying the the types of items you sell. As the old saying goes, never put all your eggs in one basket. The more options you have for buyers, the more potential to get a sale.

Either way, best offer just screams "I'm not confidant in my item selling, please low-ball me", which doesn't exactly put confidence in buyers to bid more.

If there's one thing I will agree with, there aren't many buyers out there, that's for sure. Given the current state of our economy, many consumers are willing to spend, but they only want bargains. Despite all the bogus claims from economists and the media about how wonderful our economy is, the economic reality facing Americans today is far different than what the news tells us. The average American is flat broke! Comes here to Missouri, half our population lives in poverty.

You said it yourself, "I rarely make a sale over $10." Yep, and its for the very reasons I stated above, people can't afford to spend much, they're broke.

One thing you need to do is increase your shipping cost.  Shipping comics Media Mail is illegal.

Yes, comics are classed as periodicals and as such are not eligible to be shipped via media male.

You are buying a commodity item at retail prices, and then trying to compete in a saturated market with dealers who can beat your margins because they are buying at wholesale prices. That is not a business model that is going to generate consistent sales.

How to get my listings in front of buyers who have disposable income?    What do I do?  Have a firesale and mark everything down by 99% and free shipping?

I researched your signed Batman #50 at $75. Only one of those has sold on eBay in the last three months - it sold for $58 and was CGC graded at 9.8.

Your Firefly #1 graded CGC 9.6 at $42 may have a similar problem. Several copies at CGC 9.8 have sold for well under your price. In fact your asking price appears to be higher than any copy that has sold here in the last three months.

Those buyers with disposable income simply might not be looking for your items.

I see a couple of issues that might be hurting your sales. The big one that jumps out at me is that you are selling alot of comics that are really only worth $1. I look in your Marvel Comics section and you have no current comics, it looks like the most current one you have up is the 9.6 Black Panther #1. You have to sell what your customers are looking for, where is the Immortal Hulk, Naomi and Venom? Next your categories are confusingly labeled, why is there a small and independent category but then you have categories for each independent publisher? Can't you just combine all of them into one big category? And lastly your prices are all over the place, you have the run of Batman White Night for $299.99, I'm sorry but that is insanely over priced. But on the other hand you have the 1st appearance of Ronin sitting in a avengers lot of comics selling for $26. You could have sold that two months ago for over $60. I don't know if you use the Key Collector App but if you don't you should download that and see what your comics are really worth currently. Also because you are buying your comics straight from a store you should pre-order has much as you can. Stores love it when you pre-order your comics and they always give a discount, you can also pre-order from DCBS and Mid-Town Comics. Rule of thumb is always try for a 35% margin, with comics the profit comes with selling a high volume.  I hope this help and don't give up!

I'll probably die with my childhood collection of comics for the same reason your posting about, as a seller and a occasional buyer, I have to agree with some of your earlier replies  that your better off selling  in lots to reduce shipping and pass some of the savings along. Bad enough people cry for free shipping on a $4 item  ...  I've all but given up with books since I cant compete with goodwill stores selling $1 above shipping cost... wish you best of luck!

I don't do any buying now. When I did, I very rarely bought books at cover price. For a while during the 90's i used a comic buying service run by an acquaintance. Used to get 40-50% off cover on most items. I sure a lot of eBay buyers do this kind of thing and only cherry-pick the eBay listings for special items. I see some evidence of this in my  sales. Golden Age books of any genre usually sell for Overstreet or better depending on condition. Real interest seems to drop off with Silver Age and later. My collection may be skewing this trend as I never was interested in superhero titles.

Hope some of my ramblings help.

Thanks for this info.  That listing of the avengers for $26.00 has been up for over a year.  If I could have sold it for $60.00 then why I do still have it at $26.00?   You must not have clicked thru on that Batman White Knight and read the whole listing.  I'm fed up and just don't care - I'm being an A-Hole!   Just want to see what happens....LOL.  I do pre-order my stuff from a comic store that I've had a long relationship with (since I was a kid).  They only give me 20% off.  I've been considering making a change on that, difficult since I consider them my friends.
