Buyers Not Paying

Has anyone had issues with non payment from buyers? Sometimes they will completely ignore me or they'll respond several days later saying they're waiting for a check. If you don't have the money at the time why did you bid? One buyer won 5 different Barbie outfits, I combined shipping, but she never even responded. Or how about when they go through a bidding war up to $80 or more then when the auction closes there's no response. Not even from the second chance buyer. It happens with a variety of items and it's so frustrating.

Re: Buyers Not Paying

Exactly this. They should at least give sellers the option require immediate payment upon winning an auction. It may drive less traffic to my items, but I would be happy for that trade off. Some things just don't sell that well in BIN format and auction is the way to go. It would be very easy to require payment upon bidding, but I would love to know why they don't????

Re: Buyers Not Paying

While I don't have them often it happens on occasion. It is one of the risks I realize and accept with using the auction format. I have filters setup to block bidders/buyers with more than 2 non-payment strikes which stops a few but not all. I would actually rather have a buyer  not pay that to have them pay on a BIN item only to either request to cancel the sale or worse allow me to ship it then file NAD case once they have received it and cost me the return postage fee.

There are also world events that take place that can possibly be the reason a buyer  does not pay. I have had one instance where a buyer placed an early bid on a 7 day auction and never paid and attempts to contact the buyer failed to produce any results. I was actually contacted by a  family member sometime later that apologized for the non-payment and informed me that their father had passed away before the auction completed. He was one of the 65 million people that die worldwide every year. I have had a couple of cases where the buyer ended up in the hospital between the time they placed their bid and when the auction ended who were unable to pay. In one case I had a buyer who really wanted the item, which I still had and I worked with the buyer, once they were out of the hospital, to complete the sale using a separate listing and they used a guest ID to make the purchase.

The non-payments happen for a number of reasons as do the returns with BIN items and auctions as well but it's just part of selling on eBay.

Re: Buyers Not Paying

OK, heartily agree with that! But, in the meantime, are you not cancelling after 4 days of nonpayment?

Re: Buyers Not Paying

eBay does allow sellers to require immediate payment, but it cannot be used in the auction format.

Quite a few sellers have discovered that FP with IPR is the way to go.

Re: Buyers Not Paying

Replying to the note about "eBay has no way to make them pay." Yes, they do. Every Auction Site in the world requires a valid form of payment on file just to bid. If you don't pay within the required time, they charge your card. My frustration on eBay is the constant non-payers after making or accepting an offer. This is so silly, eBay could fix this in a minute. Look at Poshmark, the second you accept an offer from a seller, your card is charged and the transaction is completed.

I used to understand why eBay didn't care, they took .30c an item even on non-payers. They have since stopped that practice and now eBay loses money along with the rest of us. They promised it would be fixed and it is not.  Out of the appx 10,800 employees, ONE of them should know how to write code that requires a payment the minute an offer is accepted. Fingers crossed.

Re: Buyers Not Paying

I stipulate payment is required within four says. I remind the buyer at point of sale and again on the last day. I then cancel after four days noting the buyer did not pay option as others have said. Last, I go one step further and add the buyers ID to my blocked buyers list, so I don't have to deal with them again. I have had one buyer ask to purchase the item after I cancel. Nope is the answer, and follow the process. If you report for non-payment any bad comments they leave are removed they have to move on.

@mikey1st

If you are getting non paying buyers on your Fixed price listings, edit all your listings and require immediate payment.  That will resolve the issue entirely on these listings.

If you are getting them on your auctions.  Decide if the auctions are worth it.  If not, do only fixed price listings with IPR.

Re: Buyers Not Paying

I have had a problem of buyer not paying after I have accepted their lower offer.  Then after 4 days I cancel.  I would like a program where they need to pay immediately or where I can cancel in 2 days and get my item available for sale.

May I suggest one step even further?

Record their name/address somewhere.

Many (many) times I have had people on my BBL circumvent it by opening a new account or trying to check out as a "guest." I catch this by having recorded the mailing info of the buyers on my BBL. I then cancel the transaction and report them to eBay (does no good, but I do it anyhow).
