I have a person that made me on offer on an item. I accepted the offer. The buyer requested that I include a $200 ebay gift card with the purchase. He would pay me for the gift card. I explained to the buyer that I was not comfortable with this request. Ebay and PayPal will only protect me for the item that I sold on the auction. Not extra items I put in the box. I am only selling the item and nothing else. I am happy to ship the item to the shipping address provided by ebay at the time of sale.
Ever since I refused to purchase the ebay gift card and include it with the item that I offered for sale. The buyer has not responded to emails, texts or the invoice I sent them. How long do I wait for the buyer before I open a case to move cancel the sale?

That was a big fat scam attempt. As a newbie seller you are a scam magnet.

You dont cancel the sale, in forty eight hours you file an unpaid item dispute, and in five days you close it, Ebay will credit you with your final value fee.

read this page:

File a non paying bidder and relist.
Put them on your blocked bidders list.

Once you have allowed sufficient time to pass for the buyer to pay just open up an Unpaid Item case with eBay. This way you will be able to relist your item for sale again.
It seems like this buyer has no intention of following through with the sale as they were looking to run a scam on an unsuspecting seller. I would also report this buyer to eBay because these type of "buyers" need to be removed from eBay before they are able to do any damage or any further damage.

Here's eBay's latest advice on gift-card scam issues:
"If you believe that you or someone you know was scammed into buying eBay Gift Cards, visit our gift card page to contact customer service and find additional information related to gift card scams."

Or, you can opt to have non-pay cases open on every item if unpaid within 4-5 days. The problem with this is that they then have 4-5 days to pay before a case will open, then once the case is open they are given like another 3 days to pay before the case is closed and fees refunded back to you. During this time the item is hanging out in limbo and cannot be relisted for sale.
