Was all communication done through eBay? Was the vehicle advertised on eBay?

You don't need to respond to a bid. The winner at the end of the auction is automatically accepted.
Now you could end the listing early selling to the current bidder at the current bid amount.

I see that you are in the UK, but this is the US board, so the rules on vehicle sales may be slightly different, but if you are taking bids, then the prospective buyer doesn't need to make an offer via messaging; he can just bid that amount. Are you getting an error message when you try to send a message to that person? Are these messages all going through eBay? (i.e. not via texting or email)
