I recently listed an item and received a few bids well in advance
with about 35 seconds to go bidder a put in a maximum bid in the hundreds
with 7 seconds to the end bidder b also put in a substantial bid but less than bidder a
and yet this maximum amount of bidder b shows and bidder a won with a £10 increment on top
and yet up to this point the last bid was £71 so why was bidder **bleep** maximum amount used which was in excess of £300
thanks
Anne

You might get more help asking on the British eBay site.
Have you looked at the actual bidding history?

Bidder B's full bid was used because it was lower than bidder A's full proxy bid. Bidder A's proxy bid outbid him immediately through the automatic bidding process.
The high bid showing will be one bid increment above the second-highest bid. Your auction got two very late bids: one for £367 or more, and then one for £357 which bumped up the earlier high bid. The bid increment is £10. As noted in the other post, this is the discussion board for users in the United States, where the policies can be a little different.
