So I posted about a month ago (if anyone recalls) about a guy who filed a return because he refused to accept a package. Ebay's computer system malfunctioned and escalated the case automatically a day before it was supposed to. I called to appeal and it was a appealed successfully and they refunded me.
Well, turns out, that defect didn't leave my account until after evaluation and damaged my account. At this point it has costed me $800 in increased FVF. This will be corrected in a week but even funnier, the buyer accepted the package after the fact.
So, drawing up the summary:
Buyer refuses package, opens case
Ebay messes up
Ebay takes an excessive amount of time to update seller dashboard (even though their system can solve cases in mere minutes, it can't erase defects in the same amount of time)
Buyer then retrieves package
I get financially damaged![]()

What is the exact amount of financial damage caused by eBay's negligence? Is it worth a small claim?
Small claims are outrageously expensive in San Jose ($225, I believe, compared to $15 here in NYS). And of course, you have to go there.
You can't sue eBay for anything involving a buyer, because they can stall litigation indefinitely by never closing their investigation... but if they screwed up and charged you $800 in FVF for an item that clearly does not warrant $800 in FVF, that's on them...
BUT... the red flag here is you said that they're going to fix the problem. I'd go with that for now, because if you get the courts involved your grandchildren may be the ones collecting the refund.

What is the $800 for? I'm guessing you got knocked to below standard and now have to pay the 4% extra?
