Please see the attached screenshots. I have a cancellation case open. Ebay tells me to refund the buyer in order to close the case, yet in Paypal the payment is pending and nowhere do I see an option to refund it.

I only have 2 days remaining, what can I do? Am I missing something obvious? There is no option in ebay for this transaction to issue a refund either.

Your screenshots indicates you initiated the cancellation request.  So I really do not see anything out of the ordinary?  Your payment clearly shows pending in paypal and you started a cancellation request on eBay.

I would follow what you started and finish up the cancellation request that you started, and if or when the payment finalizes it sould refund or you can manually refund your self.

Hi, just recently there has been talk of a new scam, whereby the "buyer" pays by echeck and it shows up as Paid on ebay while Pending in PayPal. The idea is to get the seller to ship, then the scammer cancels the echeck, or it never goes through for whatever reason. The few sellers who got burned on this one say that their ebay accounts say Ok To Ship while payment is Pending in PayPal when they go to confirm. This sounds like a variation of that scam to me. Glad you caught it.

@fashunu4eeuh

For this scam to work they would have to of hacked Ebay.  A buyer can not mark a listing paid via PP.  They can mark it paid, but NOT via PP.  Are you saying that Ebay has been hacked again?

Here is how the scam works

Buyer pays with an Echeck that doesnt have the funds to back the check

The mobile app will show the payment as complete, so the seller without checking paypal ships the item

It seems to be happening almost exclusively on mobile

Ebay is also an accomplice to scam, they are telling the buyer to ship. The paypal app incorrectly shows "ok to ship", the paypal website shows "Not ok to ship". And everything on ebays end, from what sellers have reported, is showing that ebay sees the transaction as paid and they tell the seller its time to ship.

Then it is not a scam but a serious Ebay glitch.  However if some buyers have discovered this and they are dishonest people, I can see where they could take advantage of the glitch.  But if Ebay is working on this they have the ability to ID and sanction the buyers that are doing this.

It is a scam NOT a bad ebay glitch and there are many posts on this very board about it. Its international buyers using forwarder services & paying with bad e-checks. They are paying with e-checks and then contacting the sellers & telling them to ship fast. The e-checks are cancelled by paypal around the 10 day mark. The ebay issue is that ebay is telling the seller to ship despite the uncleared e-check! and thats what the scammers are counting on.

If this is happening then Ebay needs to get the OK TO SHIP icon, or the $ paid icon, in synch with Pay Pals--this is a very very bad problem and could cause a lot of grief for sellers if it is not fixed. If the payment has not cleared then there should be absolutely no instruction on Ebay side to ship.

The $ is in sync and has always been from my end.  I never go to paypal to verify a payment.  If you point to a bolded Dollar sign ($)  it will tell you it was paid with paypal and the date of payment.  If you click on the bolded dollar sign it will give you details about the payment,  Everything works correctly.

The problem is many users here in the forum have scared other sellers into thinking they have to go to paypal to verify the payment has been made or not.  That is fine if you need that extra assurance but the truth is when a payment is made at Paypal for an eBay transaction Paypal calls back to eBay and has it to show paid with the bolded dollar sign.  This is the same techniques used at millions of website for payment processor and web-site to call back with updated info.

@mam98031 Hi, i went to find where this was discussed recently. Sorry if my post was confusing. Didn't mean to suggest a buyer was marking anything Paid.

It wasn't an Ebay hacked situation (that i am aware of). Over a couple of weeks i saw 2 or 3 posts from sellers saying that their ebay had said "Ok to ship" while their PayPal payment for the transaction stated "Pending".  It was suggested that an echeck payment was a possible culprit and somehow played a role in the conflicting contradictory scenario.

@fashunu4eeuh

Then it is an Ebay Glitch as I previously stated.  A serious one and one we all need to be aware of.

As a matter of policy, I ALWAYS without fail verify my payments in PP before I ship anything.  I have done this since the day I started selling and I will continue to do this.  Over the years it has served me well and is worth the additional step in my shipping process.

I have never depended upon an Ebay page to tell me what to ship and/or when.  I have always determined that myself AFTER verifying that the payment is received.

Its still a SCAM and the scammers are exploiting ebay and paypal. They are intentionally paying with bad e-checks. Its not an ebay glitch, its scammers taking advantage.

Ebay is NOT scamming the sellers.  As for Ebay, it is a glitch, one that needs immediate attention, but a glitch nonetheless.  Some buyers have discovered this glitch and are using it to their advantage.  It is those buyers that are the scammers NOT Ebay.

Before this if a seller received an echeck from a buyer, the sales record in Ebay showed payment pending.

At this point in time it does work fine as you have described.

The problem is many users here in the forum have scared other sellers into thinking they have to go to paypal to verify the payment has been made or not.

I'm one of the sellers that has suggested verifying payments on the PP website before shipping.  I used NO scare tactic in my post nor was my post ever intended to scare anyone.  I simply shared my process and my opinion.  I get it that you don't think it is important and you are entitled to your opinion.  Mine is just different than yours.  That does NOT make what I posted intended to scare anyone.  It is much simpler than that.  My intent was to SHARE the procedure I use that has served me well for a couple of decades.  And in that time I have never shipped anything before a payment had cleared.

I respect that your process works for you and many other sellers.  As does my procedure even though it is different than yours.  The information was shared for others to consider or disregard as they see fit.  Whatever process a seller chooses, if it works for them, it is fine.  It is their choice.  But to portray that something someone else posted to be a "scare" tactic is a misrepresentation of what was actually posted.  So who is trying to scare whom?

I could care less what you have posted about this subject, and further more my reply was not directed back to you, so I would suggest calming down and realizing not everything here in the forum is directed to or about you.

I'm aware that you did not direct your posting to any one seller.  I'm not worked up so there is no need for me to "calm down".   I simply responded that I am one of the sellers that you posted about verifying $$ with PP.  I simply clarified that my posting was not a scare tactic of any kind as you suggested.  It was simply sharing my procedure.  Everyone reading my posts is welcome to consider it or ignore it.  It is their choice to make.

There is a separate issue that is being discussed on a couple other threads regarding the Ebay side not showing when a payment is pending when it is an echeck, but showing it as a good payment now and saying the seller needs to ship.  This is apparently happening with some echeck payments.

So while for you, and many others I'm sure, checking your Ebay reports may be the best way for you to handle things.  There isn't a darn thing wrong with that.  For me and others, we do the extra step to verify the payment is actually in our PP accounts.  And there isn't a darn thing wrong with that.  We just have different procedures.   Nothing more.  No one is trying to "scare" anyone.  We are just sharing thoughts, ideas and opinions.

I get that you claim not be trying to scare anyone but the fact is you seem to be compulsed to respond to every post as if you need to defend yourself. Saying no one is trying to scare anyone is stated as a fact on your behalf which I am sure you did not did it purposely, but then again you are not trying to scare anyone that you are aware of either?

I believe that I know my motives far better than you do.  I'm stating a fact.  You are the one that is claiming I said something or intended something that I did not.  I'm Not defending myself as there is nothing I need to defend.  I respect that you don't agree with me, I take no issue with that at all.  Your opinion is that I and/or others were/are trying to "scare" some other sellers.  I can only speak for myself and I know for my posts, that is not the case.

Saying no one is trying to scare anyone is stated as a fact on your behalf which I am sure you did not did it purposely, but then again you are not trying to scare anyone that you are aware of either?

You are again misrepresenting what I said.  I did not say "no one is trying to scare anyone".  My exact statement was "I'm one of the sellers that has suggested verifying payments on the PP website before shipping.  I used NO scare tactic in my post nor was my post ever intended to scare anyone."  That is a FACT!  For whatever reason you have, you seem to want my posts seem to be something they are not.  The FACT is I did not say what you are stating that I did and I did not intend what you are saying I did.

Enough please!

Anyhow.....

This topc got WAY off track and that is not even what is going on in this scenario.

What is happening is the request was to be cancelled, the buyer of course is not doing anything, ebay is instructing me to REFUND BY SEPTEMBER 30, but in Paypal the funds are still pending and it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to initiate any kind of refund.

I called Ebay yesterday who had me on for 20 minutes, kept putting me on hold, transferred me to another department, and finally said I had to take it up with Paypal.

So Paypal called me back after I got on their automated wait list, I explained the situation to them, and they also confirmed that there is NO WAY I can do what ebay is asking me to do in this situation (refund the buyer as the transaction is endlessly pending).

The person I talked to at ebay assured me I would not receive a defect, but I am just not so sure that is true...... and now I am unsure how to proceed. I feel like due to this glitch that I can do absolutely nothing about I am going to end up with a defect and won't even be able to sell.

Can anyone help???

That only works from a computer or the classic site from any other device using a browser.

The main problem is the app, which ebay tries to push onto sellers - especialy new sellers. THAT's why we tell them to verify it in their paypal account, except the paypal app seems to have a similar problem.

It's also why I would never, ever, use an app for any of my selling sites. Or for paying bills or won listings, or banking.

Here is another perfect thread as to why I wouldn't use the apps on here even if it was the only way to sell.

This has been going on too long, and too many new(and even some old) sellers lose everything and will never be back, including anyone they mention this to.

Fix it or delete it. Those are your only 2 choices, and I vote for #2, because I don't hold much any faith in #1.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I have never and will never use the app. This is all through my browser, Firefox, on my computer.

Anyhow the issue has been resolved now.
