A request from e-Bay?

This afternoon, Sat., 02/11, I received a request for my full 9 digit SS#. The address was www.riskremedyweb.ebay.com. Is that legitimate?

A request from e-Bay?

@kabilab;

That's a partial link. If the complete link looks like below, then that is on the eBay.com domain, because the characters that are after the "www" and just before the first / slash are " .ebay.com " . This screenshot is from someone else who got a request to update their SSN from eBay.

eBay is requiring full SSNs from sellers when they get close to or exceed $600 in sales, because the new federal requirement for when payment processors have to issue a 1099-K is for $600 or more in gross receipts (payment total, including shipping but not including sales tax collected by eBay). It looks like you could be close to the threshold.

FYI, today is a Friday, not a Saturday, unless you really want a head-start on the weekend.

If it was under the "from eBay" then it was.

No, it was not from eBay. Contact eBay directly. eBay would never ask you for your SSN via email. They will ask you to update your profile with your SSN, but they will never ask you to send it to them in an email.

I clicked the link and it didn't come up. It was blocked.  Then I googled it.  No such thing.  Be careful and report this to Ebay pronto.

SCAM

Forward the email to eBay

spoof@ebay.com

They will look into and send you an email most likely confirming that it is fraudulent.

Did you enter your user named and password on the new page? If so then you just gave away access to your account. CHANGE BOTH IMMEDIATELY.

Here's a post from 2021 that mentions that web address and was given to the OP after they updated some of their information and it was through Ebay.

So now we have had answers stating that this is legit and answers stating that it's not.

Maybe we should request clarification from someone actually employed by eBay.

I'd say it's probably from eBay because their own support center states they will send important messages into your ebay message box.   From their help site:

"

  • We’ll always send a copy of any important messages to your eBay Messages

    Suspicious email

    1. Don’t click any links in the email or open any attachments.
    2. Forward the message to us as an attachment at spoof@ebay.com.

"

The fact we got messages in our eBay messages box is probably a good sign?

I did some more looking.  The minimum reporting threshold for 2022 has been lowered so more people will probably get notified to confirm compared to prior years, once they meet the threshold.  Based on  @lacemaker3's response above,  especially with "ebay.com" at the end of the URL, this should be legitimate and anyone at or exceeding the threshold will  undoubtedly getting an email at some point.

I'd probably try to find where in your ebay preferences to update it, and not click on a link in an email or message - even from ebay.

A request from e-Bay?

I also received an email telling me that my payments are on hold asking to provide my SSN. Thinking it might be fraudulent, I signed into my Ebay account. There was the SAME message under "My eBay selling account".

If it made it in there, it has to be real.

Although one person said it's fake since Ebay would NOT ask to send your SSN to them in an email, yes that's true, they never would.

If you click on the link provided to update, it takes you to another Ebay page (look for ebay in the web address) and asks you to update.

That is not the same as replying to an email by putting your SSN in the body of a responding email.

I think it was assumed that a response from the seller would be an actual email. It isn't
