Buyer:
"Hi, just wanted to let you know I had a small issue with my order. I'd like a partial refund"
Seller:
"Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. Thanks for confirming with a pic. Would you be OK with a 20% refund?"
Buyer:
"I'd like a 50% refund. I wanted to get in touch with you before leaving feedback"
----------------
NOTE TO EBAY: This is feedback extortion. You should consider the mere mention of feedback in any refund request from a buyer to be extortion because this is the effect it has.

In isolating this one particular thing, and generally speaking: I certainly agree that where fixing a problem leads to making less money, that is in itself is a disincentive to fix that problem.

Yes but (a) they can still leave negative feedback and (b) I would get docked in seller metrics for the return. A double whammy. This is the calculus.
If you refund promptly on return, your seller account will not be compromised.
You may not get some fees (30c non-refundable PP fee for example) back.
Negative feedback may influence future customers but is not used by eBay to measure your account.
If you get a Defect on your selling account what problem do you see it causing?
TRS get a measly 5% off on some shipping services and a stupid badge. Meh.

If your Service Metrics on returns is "Very High", you pay an additional 5% in Final Value Fees.
For me, this would be thousands of dollars.

Agree my items have high shipping costs, 5% is a big deal. I bend over backwards for everyone and seems like I just get bent over
