I've been a member since 1998. I used ebay quite extensively up until the tax reforms when they started taxing everything. Used goods that have already been taxed by government are and should not be taxed again, it's called double dipping. Anyway, it became a turnoff, so I stopped using ebay to sell things, bought a couple of things once in a while. Then, a few days ago I sold an item on ebay. This item sold for $120. I was charged a final value fee based on $132....
The first problem is being charged 12.9% for something by a company that doesn't do anything except run server farms and write a software program. You do millions of transactions, no need to take so much of a cut. I hear it's worse for video games and other items...but then you charge me a final value fee including the tax???? **bleep**?...First, to the people of Illinois, 10% sales tax? wow, fire your politicians. But hey it's tax, whatever, the point is that ebay is adding on to the final value fee the tax as well? Is that even legal? It's sales tax, a requirement by the government, why the F are you charging me based on the amount including tax? the final value is not $132, The final value of the item was $120, where the auction ended at. The tax does not add any value to the item. So your grubby little greedy paws are stealing from the people who use this service. You are Thieves.
goodbye

I don't get much involved, but I do look. Such threads make me smile, because every time a puerile, belligerent, ignorant seller afflicted with coprolalia departs, it's a win for the rest of us.

I totally agree. I used to pounce on similar OP rants only wanting to grind their ax -- with an obvious lack of research that has been right at their fingertips all along. I've had enough of spending an inordinate amount of my time and energy repeating over and over the same response in an effort to quell ignorance of eBay's policies and the difference between mandated taxes and fees, for instance, that is common across the board in the financial industry.
When I see posts in a snot-flying rage over the actual bottom-line eBay sales tax facilitator service fee of only about 1% of the total sales price, I see that emotion alone is running way too many sellers here.
I don't run my eBay business on emotion. I run it on research and flexibility. ACCEPT>ADJUST>ADAPT. That's worked very well for me since I started selling here in 1998. The OP says he has been here since 1998, too... there's no excuse for not knowing what's been going on and not adapting to it like successful sellers practice.
Cheers, Duffy
