30% Markdown -- Is 30% that much better than 25%?

The previous 4 weeks were the worst 28-day stretch over the past 12 months. With that, I had been running 25% off, most of the time.

Tuesday I started a 30% off and BAM! Things have been rolling right along for the best 3-day stretch in quite some time. jfyi, I have a lot of multi-quantity items that don't show up in sold items.

When you go into promotions and initiate a sale event, the default markdown percentage is 30%. I had been running 25% off with little success but when I did 30% starting Tuesday this week, sales have been robust.

Soooo, the questions are....  Is 30% off some type of threshold where listings get thrust to the upper echelon of ebay viewing? Or is a 30% discount something that catches the eye of the buyer?  Or was it just time that some of my chit started moving again?....

The only other thing I did was change my handling time on Monday morning to 2-day on all 1150 listings and then changed it back to 1-day on Wednesday as we were expecting some ice Monday evening and I was out of town for a day.

As always, still reaching for that magical mystery tweak to keep sales a cookin'..........

Looking at your items the original prices where way too much. You can by at any hardware cheaper than that. Yes, 30% has now put your items in the correct price range. Plus buyers typically shop by lowest price first therefore they are now seeing them faster on the list when searching. Price is everything on Ebay. The ones over-priced blame Ebay, and the ones priced correctly don't need to.

LMAOL A coincidence, they would have sold anyways, you just lost 5% of your profits. selling on eBay can make you superstitious and believe in higher powers. May the force be with!

With all due respect, they may not have sold anyway.

OP reports greater success with 30% off, so apparently the 25% off was not working.

Twenty five percent off sounds good, but 30% off sounds even better!

Sorry if this is a repeat, I didn't read all the other responses.. I think there are particular Ebay thresholds - it's possible that a 30% sale gives certain advantages - it might bump you into a more visible seller group.

u guys are right, my sense of humor is off today!! Although it would be a nice experiment if the OP would have half his stock at 25% and the other half at 30% off and then let us know how that works the next time a round.

Re: 30% Markdown -- Is 30% that much better than 25%?

I just recalled something that might explain what is happening.

Ebay had said when they started adding Best Offer to listings, they would only send the seller offers that were 30% or less off.  They would not auto accept, unless of course you had an auto accept set up.

So possibly that 30% is the magic number as far as Ebay is concerned, and that is why marking things down 30% is giving the OP success.

You are probably right. But just for the sake of argument what if someone overpriced their items and then gave the 30% promotion! Do you think that's how some big sellers get their exposure?
