Very frustrated with customer service on this one. No one knows.
We all know if we sell over 20K we get a 1099. To my understanding US sales tax is not part of this.
However gross shipping charges collected are. Also gross vehicle charges are the question no one can answer.
ie: You sell a motorcle for $2000.00 and collect a 250.00 deposit.. Are we 1099"d for the $2000.00 or the $250.00 ? Even more of a riddle, what if that $250 goes through paypal or zell. What if the buyer comes to pick up the bike and wants to renogotiate?
Not a single person at Ebay is equipped to answer this question.
Anyone have previous experience with this?

eBay would only report the payment that they processed. If you require a $250 deposit, that’s the only amount eBay knows about.

Ebay charges fees on the 2K right? What do you THINK they are going to report the sale amount of? Even if you take the balance of the sale in cash, eBay knows you sold it for 2K and would record it as such.

Not correct. When the items are marked picked up, eBay will be charging fees on the total sale, not just the depost. If the items are not marked picked up, the seller can take a hit for non-delivery.

Ebay or Paypal would only show actual dollars "taken in" by the seller......... There has to be a "paper" trail to the money. Frankly, I don't know enough about Motors to know whether the $2000 would be marked Paid by the seller on ebay.......if so, it would included. If the $250 deposit is refundable and was refunded, it would be shown on the 1099, but the seller could deduct it from the total, since it was refunded.
Point being if a non Motors item was purchased, but not paid.........it would not show in a 1099........if it was purchased/paid/refunded........it would show on the 1099, but the seller would file it as "refunded" on a tax return.

My statements are correct.
eBay does not handle payments for vehicle sales, aside from deposits, as I correctly stated. eBay does not charge a fee based on the total sale amount for vehicle sales; they charge a flat fee for a "successful listing". Sellers do not "take a hit" for non-delivery in a vehicle sale, because such sales on eBay are non-binding for both buyer and seller.
