A buyer who purchased new Rubbermaid mop heads from me filed for a return saying the items were defective, thinner than expected. I offer free returns so eBay approved the request. A few days later I sent the buyer a message saying the product was not defective and if he did not like the product, he should take it up with the manufacturer. Less than 48 hours later, I received a message from eBay saying the case was closed in my favor!
I did not ask for a review nor did I contact customer service. Yet eBay did me right! It is nice to see that eBay is proactively working to make the marketplace a better place.

Sounds like "not an eBay action" there, but more of a "buyer action".
As you offer "free returns" the buyer was not out of line for opening a "return request". (for whatever reason)
May, or may not be the end. They may go to their payment method for resolution.
You offer "free returns". That means for any reason. Buyer could return because they decided that they do not like the color, or because it is Wednesday.

Buyer might have closed the case and contacted their payment source.
You have free returns, so buyers can return for any/no reason.

That wasn't eBay. That was the buyer closing the return request. They probably took your advice about taking it up with the manufacturer. When that fails they may very well initiate a chargeback on their credit card.
You offer free returns. That means free returns for ANY reason at all.

Yup, free returns for any reason and I pay the return shipping. I do have a few heavy items that the buyer pays for the return shipping but for the most part its on me.

Buyer is no longer a registered user. And yes, I allow my buyers to return for any reason and I pay the shipping. It's has worked for me for many years.

Buyer is no longer a registered user. I am not complaining about the return, I offer free returns for any reason or no reason. In the past, eBay has let me know about chargebacks but never have I been responsible.
