Package received, item missing, no returns stated

Hello all,

I have never ran into this situation before. I sold an item stating I do not accept returns, dropped the package off at the post office and received a receipt of acceptance on 4/6. The item was delivered in/at mailbox 4/9. I receive am email from the buyer on 4/10 (30 hours after delivery), stating the envelope was ripped and taped back together and item was missing. Buyer sends me pictures. In the email accuses me of sending package in the current condition without item or that it happened in transit. The package was sent first class mail with no additional insurance and the whole total is about $16. I do not feel I should have to refund the money since the package arrived and I was contacted 30 hours later.

Please help. Thank you.

You should take the buyer at their word and file a claim with the post office. USPS will investigate the claim and potentially have more information concerning the condition it was delivered in. In the meantime, refund the buyer. If the buyer turns out to be a liar, then you should report their conduct to eBay. But this way, you get USPS on the hook to look into the matter for you.

The buyer has 30 days after the delivery date to open a case with eBay.  The 30 hours means nothing whatsoever.

I have shipped thousands of orders over the years and never had this happen. I would probably go radio silent and let the buyer make the next move.

If the buyer opens a Item Not Received case, you enter the tracking number that proves delivery and you will win the case without ever communicating with the buyer.

If the buyer just goes away, the buyer was bluffing. They may have run their limit with eBay and lost their MBG protection.

If the buyer opens a Item Not as Described case, you will be refunding.

Thank you, unfortunately I contacted the buyer and said "I was checking into it and asked for patience while I did so". I did not know if I was able to file a claim with the post office and was going to call them tomorrow.

Luckily it is only $16 and not $160 or $1600.

Do not refund anything until the buyer opens a case with eBay.

If the buyer does open a case, you can come back here for advice on how to proceed.   Provide details but no personal information and someone will be able to walk you through it.

Be patient in these situations.  Don't let the buyer pressure you into anything.

Be patient when you post here.  There are usually lots of folks that will chime in over the course of the day.

I always wonder why buyers accuse people of sending stuff out damaged, I had that happen once, had to get the nut to actually send the item back for me to see that USPS had smashed it on the way to him.

Like yeah OP needs $16 so desperately he's going to mail out a torn envelope as an excuse to keep it.  More likely the buyer wants a free remote and invented an excuse to try to get it.

It is extremely unlikely that a knife and sheath will ever be delivered intact in an envelope.
