eBay found that I was owed money and I am being sent a refund for an item that was never received. However the card that I originally purchased the item on three months ago has since been closed by me. How will eBay then refund my money? I don't know how to ask them. Thank you

They make a refund to your on file credit card or bank account. It wouldn't matter if it's a different card
Do you still want to talk to eBay? If so, this is how you contact them
Open an eBay page
Top left corner, click on 'help & contact'
Click on 'buying'
Bottom of the page, left side, Click on 'returns and refunds'
Click on top of the page 'return an item for a refund '
Go to bottom right of the page, in very small print click on ' have us call you'
eBay will call you in 2-9 minutes

The refund will go back to that card account.
If it's closed, you need to contact the card issuer to find out how to get the refund.

No, refunds go back to the original funding source.

I'm sorry, but you are mistaken. Where did you obtain that information?

@house*of*pawsI respect your opinion and saw you giving such advice. You didn't realize OP's original Credit card account is 'closed'
Once one account is closed, eBay will use the alternative account. eBay will not use the original Credit Card account, because it's closed. There is no way to return funds to original closed account. The account number is diverted and nullified. Unless, credit was made in first two cycles, which will be maximum of 8 weeks. For some banks that time period is one cycle or 4 weeks plus fractions there off
Once credit card number is no longer valid, but is tied to another valid account, at that point only, the refund will be made to original account, then transferred to the new card number/account automatically. But I don't see O P suggesting that
When you cancel a credit card, the number is no longer valid. In most cases, the credit card company will decline the refund, since the account is not open
These are facts of credit cards. You can read them in fine print at the time you sign up for a credit card. Unfortunately, no one reads the fine print

Where are you getting your information? That’s not how it’s worked before. Is this since ‘Managed Payments?

I am surprised here! This is a Credit Cards policy. Once an account is closed and no new account is tied up to that account, refunds to closed account will be rejected. Banks wouldn't want to get stock with an unclaimed payment. That's how business works
"Managed Payments" requires two accounts assigned to it at all times, guess, for the same reason

Well, let us know what happened!?
Certainly, there're lots of interest here on this board to know more about the subject. You've nothing to worry about. Money is on its way

eBay requires one linked bank account for MP sellers. They do not require a second linked bank or credit card. You can confirm that here and here.

You need to contact the card issuer to find out what will happen @sdhk-32. If you have another account with them, they'll most likely accept the refund and apply it to the other card. If you don't have another account with them then only they can tell you what they'll do.
Some card companies will accept the refund and mail you a check. Other companies will reject the refund. Call the card company today to find out what will happen. If they tell you that the refund will be rejected then you need to contact eBay to find out what your options are. At the bottom of this page you can use the 'contact us' option and when the chat box pops up, scroll past the automated options to speak with an agent.

@wastingtime101 Those links are for getting paid and not to make purchases. Our discussion is on getting a refund on a purchase
I say it one more time for you, If Buyer's credit card account is closed, there are no other credit card accounts tied to it and certain time has passed, refunds will be rejected by that closed credit card institution
These two people @kensgiftshop and @house*of*paws say I am not correct. @wastingtime101 casting doubt by showing MP rules for getting paid on Sales
@wastingtime101 You're suggesting OP to contact their CC institution to find out. That route would go no where. Their account is closed there. Once CC accounts are closed, card issuers close ties with card holders. They certainly wouldn't accept payments and send a check out because they have no relationship with card holders anymore for variety of reasons. No relationship, means no funds will be accepted on their behalf
Let's go through the case one more time,
OP purchased an item
OP closed CC account of payment method
OP is trying to get a refund
I say; the refund will go to the other financial account connected to OP's eBay account
@house*of*paws and @kensgiftshop say I am wrong. They say; refund will go to the original method of payment and you @wastingtime101 suggested for OP to contact the closed CC account and ask
First off,
No eBay account will be operating without a live and open Bank Account for selling and a CC account for purchases. As soon as a CC expires, or gets close to the date, eBay will send out notifications for members to post corrections, if not, transactions will be halted
Members need to have a live method of payment at all times
Second
Once any CC account is closed. Although being the original payment method at certain time, with certain conditions, all transactions will be rejected. Why? It's a closed account. If CC company accepts the refunds, what are they going to do with it? " send you a check"!? As @wastingtime101 suggests, not really, they don't have a valid address anymore, account is closed
CC companies reject the transaction because if they accept the funds, since they had cut ties with the cardholder, funds become an unclaimed property
Third
If eBay or any selling platform has to refund or charge a member, going to a valid source is automatic. For example, if you sell something, get paid through your bank account, close that bank account but have a live CC account on file, you can't sell anymore but if you need to pay off for a return, your CC card will be charged. It's not the original form of payment but it's the alternative
This is very simple and logical. I have no idea what the confusion is all about

Which is why it's confusing that you brought MP requiring two payment accounts "assigned to it" into the discussion.
To make it clear regarding purchases: any buyer can choose to store zero payment methods on their account and instead enter the one they want to use at the time of checkout. Any buyer can choose to check out as a guest and enter the one payment method they want to use at the time of checkout.
Managed Payments requires sellers to have one backup bank account on file.
Managed Payments requires buyers to store zero payment methods on their account.
Managed Payments does not require buyer or seller to store two payment accounts on file.

Can you weigh in here tyler@ebay or velvet@ebay? This discussion is apparently getting some posters upset and it's now going around in circles. Thanks.
