I hear you. Just had a sale, but it was on an item where the required item specific was only the brand. Weird. But, what I see is happening is that our clothing, shoes listings have had new item specifics added that are required and they are blank with size, etc. EBAY 10/15 announcement states that if the listing doesn't include the required item specifics (the new fields) our listings won't appear in search results and will not publish. They now have the same fields (size, width, etc.) in a multitude of fields. So, even though you may have done it completely prior to 10/15---they added the fields again and they are blank. It's costing precious sales $$.
