Are you able to scroll through messages using a mobile browser instead?
Threaded messages are different than the older style of chronological messages; you may have to find the original thread to see all the back and forth messages from a single user.
If you have eBay messages from members forwarded to an email address, that may be easier to navigate.
If the problem is specific to the app, you can try reporting app issues directly to eBay by shaking your device while the app is active.
